Cloyde L. (Cap) Miner

1923 ~ 2013

Our husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend died August 7, 2013. He was born January 11, 1923 to Milo and Ellen Ora Miner in Salt Lake City (SLC), Utah but grew-up in Pomona, California where he attended Junior College prior to being called to service in WW II. After graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy, he enlisted in the Navy as an Ensign aboard the USS Bracken Troop Attack Transport and served in the invasions of the Russell Islands, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Following the war, he returned to the Merchant Marines and sailed on the USS General Gordon for two years. Later, he completed a business degree at BYU and worked for KSL TV in SLC where he met his future wife Margaret Whitney. They married in 1951 and moved to Hawaii where he continued working in television. In 1954, they returned to SLC and he started his own accounting business. At the outbreak of the Vietnam War, he again returned to the Merchant Marines rising to the rank of Captain and sailing all the seas of the world before retirement in 1987.

A descendant of Utah pioneers, Cloyde was a member of the LDS church and a faithful ward teacher. He enjoyed sports, cars, was a great dancer, and loved the music of the Big Bands. But nothing gave him more pleasure than being with his family. They will always cherish his memory.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Pat) Miner; children Maggi (Tom) Machala, Robert (Debra) Miner, Kevin (Deborah) Miner, Susan (Dan) Harrison; siblings Don Miner, Lila Meyer; grandchildren Joseph Machala, Michael Machala, Lindley Miner, Robert Miner, Andrew Harrison, Maudee Miner, Eli Harrison and Alexis Miner.

A graveside ceremony will be held Monday, August 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 S., SLC, Utah. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Disabled American Vetera
