Malcolm Shannon

1954 ~ 2018

"You can call me dad. You can call me Malcolm. You can call me sir. You can call me ‘hey you'. But don't you ever call me daddy again!" Malcolm Shannon, loved his family and grandchildren, but hated the name "daddy". This line from the John Wayne classic, Big Jake, was a common quote in the Shannon household.

Malcolm passed away unexpectedly May 2, 2018 in Farr West, Utah. Malcolm was born September 28, 1954 to Gerald Kurn Shannon and Virginia Leigh Pace in Chico, California. Malcolm was a California boy through and through. He often told anecdotal stories of riding his bike through Bidwell Park and fishing in Big Chico Creek. He often corrected your pronunciation of Almonds (annoying, right?) and always claimed he was from Northern California, despite the fact he lived in Southern California for most of his life.

Malcolm was proud to serve with the United States Airforce in Cambodia and Laos during the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Malcolm served in the security forces and put his training to good use by joining the police force through the Department of Defense upon completing his service to his country. He started his own business as a security risk consultant and worked with groups such as Lloyds of London and many nationally known corporations.

Malcolm was a writer. He loved writing and had a gift of using words. It was only fitting that he fell in love with his sweetheart through the correspondence of letters. He married Marcina Murdock in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and raised one boy and two girls, Kyle, Ailee, and Cameran, in Orange County (South County), California before retiring in Utah.

Malcolm felt his mission on earth was to help people feel safe physically, spiritually, and emotionally making family wherever he went. Whether through his profession or among his neighbors, Malcolm always stopped to lend a hand and make everyone feel safe in every situation. He had a gift of knowing the needs of others and often answered the call to come to the aid of those in distress, guns a blazing if necessary.

Malcolm was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings. He was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America and was Scouter of the Year for the El Camino Real District. Malcolm mentored hundreds of scouts during that time and loved the opportunity to serve.

Malcolm is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marcina, and three children, Kyle Shannon (Rachel), Ailee Massey (Justin), and Cameran Shannon, 7 grandchildren Ben, Aaron, Jake, John, Eli, and Elsie Shannon and Clark Massey, his mother, Leigh Shannon, his brothers, Greg Shannon (Debi), Matt Shannon (Jenny), Jerry Shannon (Karen) and his sister, Victoria Shannon-Atkin (Boyd). He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Kurn Shannon.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday May 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center located at 2860 East Cherry Lane, Layton, Utah 84040. Visitation to the family will be just prior to the funeral from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the same location. Interment will be at the Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale, Utah.
