Anne Morgan Herbert passed away peacefully in her daughter Martha\s home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico on January 29, 2020. Her husband Bartholomeus Herbert, of almost 62 years, was at her side as she passed as he had been for many hours every day as her condition worsened.
Anne was born on April 7, 1937, to Harold Morgan and Jessie Christensen Morgan in Salt Lake City, Utah and has always been proud of her pioneer heritage. Her grandfather, John Hamilton Morgan was a pioneer General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His wife, Mary Ann Linton was born in Utah in 1865 of parents from Ireland and England. Anne\s maternal grandfather Marinus Christensen left Denmark for Utah with his family and crossed the plains when he was 2 years old. He married Frances Ann Thomson who was born in Utah in 1864 of parents from England and Wales. Anne\s mother's family was called by Brigham Young to move to St. John\s Arizona where her mother and older siblings were born. Anne had many fond memories of visiting St. John\s on a regular basis when growing up.
Anne graduated from Salt Lake City\s West High School in 1955 and then attended the University of Utah where she met her future husband, Bert, at a ballroom dance class. She also attended school at Arizona State University and Palo Alto Community College majoring in music (piano). She taught piano for much of her adult life and also used her musical talents to accompany many plays, recitals and to serve in the church. She went back to school later in life and became a medical transcriptionist.
Anne and Bert were married in the Los Angeles Temple on February 1, 1958, while she was living in California. They then started their married life in the Chicago area where Bert had been hired as a metallurgical engineer. They are the parents of 6 children: Melody Anne Herbert, Derrick Bartholomeus Herbert, Martha Dawn Johnson, Margo Lynn Schlesser, Shaun Langdon Herbert, and Michele Lee Reichard. They have 25 grandchildren and 10 (soon to be 13) great-grandchildren.
While living in Chicago, Anne and Bert were called to be presidents of the young women and young men's organizations at church. Anne states this is when she learned to trust in the Lord and work hard to bless those around her. Through their efforts, a group of 19 youth turned into 54 who regularly met at church and gained testimonies of the Savior.
After living in the Chicago area they moved to Michigan, then back to Illinois and eventually to Pennsylvania. Wherever they went they served to their utmost and left behind treasured friends and memories. Not only did Anne serve others she also invited those in desperate situations to live with her and Bert over the years. These individuals have attested to the unconditional love that Anne and Bert showed to them when they were in the direst of circumstances.
A capstone of their life together was when they left Pennsylvania to serve a 23-month full-time mission in Española, New Mexico in 2003. Again there were many testimonials of their service to others with outpourings of love as they departed.
As they aged they left Pennsylvania for good in 2011 to live with their son Shaun in Layton, Utah for 7 years. They loved being with Shaun and his family and where very content there. During this time they continued to serve others and their grandchildren all loved Grandma\s and Grandpa\s homemade quilts they made together to give to those they loved and cared about.
As Anne\s health continued to deteriorate it was necessary for her to receive around the clock care and she entered a nursing home in Ogden, Utah. With Bert\s health also declining it was decided that they should both move to New Mexico to be by Martha who is a registered nurse who could provide the care they needed. Martha made certain Bert was able to see Anne twice each day and everyone who interacted with them could see their strong bond of love unaffected by the passing years. As Anne\s conditioned worsened Martha made the decision to bring her home so she could take care of her better and Bert could also be by her side for many more hours each day. After a month in Martha\s tender care, she peacefully passed away. So has ended a remarkable life full of charity to her family and her fellow man. She is now in the Eternal Worlds with her parents and beloved family where we are certain she is still serving others and preparing a place so Bert can be continually by her side.
The funeral will be held, Saturday, February 8, 2020, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2120 West Gentile Street, Layton, Utah with a viewing 1 hour prior.
