Ruth Sonntag Mickelson

1924 ~ 2015

On a beautiful, bright Sunday morning, February 22, 2015, our beloved mother, Ruth Sonntag Mickelson, passed away at the age of 90. Her passing was sudden and unexpected. She was the sole surviving sibling of the 12 children of Richard and Lena Sonntag. Ruth was born May 31, 1924, in Salt Lake City and was raised in the family home on 9th East and 7th South. She said, "What a lively bunch we were."

It was a home of faith, testimony, laughter, homemade bread, "family first," and tapioca pudding on special occasions. Ruth loved growing up in the Duncan Ward. A ward where "everyone grew up together, courted each other and married each other." That was the case with Mont J. Mickelson and Ruth. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on February 13, 1945 and spent 64 years together. When asked about Mont, Ruth would say, "handsome and a great dancer." They raised their four children in Bountiful, Utah, in the family home where the Welcome mat was always out, Gospel principles were taught and lived and one could always expect a treat. Ruth was an Ordinance Worker in the Bountiful Temple, a fabulous cook, expert at needlepoint, had an amazing work ethic, and created so many, wonderful memories for family and friends. She was affectionately known as "Aunt Ruth-my favorite aunt." But, more importantly, she leaves a legacy of faith and testimony in the Savior, Jesus Christ; of sacrifice, love and devotion for her family; the talent of extending her hand of friendship and compassionate service to anyone - "no one was a stranger to her" and the gift of laughter and humor.

As a parting remark, she would always quote her mother's last words to her, "love one another."

Ruth is survived by Mont J. Mickelson Jr. (Kathy), Alan C. Mickelson, Robert Mickelson (Chris), and Michelle Mickelson Moir. 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Kimball Mill Ward, 650 South 200 East, Bountiful, Utah, at 1:00 p.m., with a viewing from 12-12:45 p.m pior to services. Friends and family may call Friday, February 27, 2015, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, in Salt Lake City, from 6-8:00 p.m.
