Flora Ann Cannon Weggeland

1931 ~ 2018

Flora Ann Cannon Weggeland, our dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 27, 2018. Flora was married to G. Gail Weggeland for 65 years, and her life was filled with family adventures, professional excellence, education, serving family and community as well as traveling the world.

Flora was born in Salt Lake City on Sept 12, 1931 to Anthon S. and Flora Matthews Cannon. She was the oldest of 2 children. During her early childhood she lived in Chicago and Flagstaff before her family returned to Salt Lake where she attended East High School

Our mother was a teacher in all things, and to all people. She led by example. She was an elegant hostess that instilled the belief and knowledge that the most important guest that you could have and serve in your home is your family. Flora was a fun-loving adventurous woman who enjoyed river running, camping, hiking, navigating while riding on the back of Gail's motorcycle, sewing and gardening.

Flora dedicated her professional life to education and was an advocate for children. Upon receiving her BA from the University of Utah in education she went to work as an elementary school teacher and then helped implement the Head Start and Follow Through programs. She continued her education by completing a Masters of Education degree at BYU, followed by a PhD from The University of Utah in Educational Administration. Flora worked as a teacher, principal and administrator in the Salt Lake School District for over 40 years.

Throughout her life she was active in the educational community. Her other professional activities include serving on the Board of Regents for Snow College, an Adjunct Professor at Westminster College and the University of Utah, President of the University of Utah Emeritus Club, as well as serving on the Board of Directors of Utah Children and the Ellen Steffensen Cannon Scholarship committee.

She is survived by her husband, Gail, brother Tony (Ann) Cannon, and children Mark (Lisa) Weggeland, Lynne Meixell (Howard Evans) and Leslie Finch, 9 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 S., on Friday, Oct 5th from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary on Saturday, Oct 6th at 11 am. She will be interred in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
