Woodley Bingham Shipp, our husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed on September 1st, 2019 at home surrounded by family. Wood was born June 2, 1931 to Carl B. and Annie May Newton Shipp at their home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a graduate of East High School and the University of Utah. On August 25th, 1950 he married Geraldine (Geri) H. Jeffs in the Salt Lake City Temple. They had just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary before his passing. Together they raised five sons and one daughter—Steven W., David A. (deceased), Brian A. (deceased), Mark R., Cory M., and Laurie Anne. Wood and Geri are grandparents to 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
A talented musician, Wood played trumpet with a popular dance band known as The Rhythm Macs and later with the Westminster Symphony & Orchestra. He directed four decades of hilarious melodramas with The Oak Hills Players to the delight of audiences. He also conducted several choirs.
Wood served 7 years in the Utah National Guard. He worked at First Security Bank and as a trust officer for Walker Bank. Later ventured into real estate and then was invited by his dear friend Allyn Mahoney to join IBM where he shared his enthusiasm for computers with many scout troops. He retired after 23 years at IBM.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings including scoutmaster, counselor, and bishop. Together with Geri he served in the mission presidency of the Dallas Texas Mission and later served a second mission in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Wood loved his family intensely, was always positive, and the kindest man we knew. So many thanks to the kind professionals at Providence Home Health & Hospice.
A memorial service was held Friday, Sept. 6th, 10:00 a.m., at the Oak Hills Ward chapel, 14885 NW West Union Rd., Portland, OR. A memorial service will also be held Friday, Sept. 13th, 10:00 a.m., at the Cottonwood 4th Ward chapel, 5565 South Neighbor Lane, Holladay, UT. Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. prior to the Sept. 13th memorial service. A graveside dedication and interment for family will be at the Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3114 E. Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT.
