Don Alton Mathews

1949 ~ 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Don Alton Mathews, on May 18th, 2017.

Don was born on January 13th, 1949 to loving parents Donald J and Mary Mathews. He graduated from Cyprus High School with the class of 1967 and still wore his school colors proudly at the end of his life.

Don married and was sealed for all eternity to the love of his life, Linda Shurtz Mathews, on September 4th, 1970 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. Together they brought into this world three children; Don Alton, Robert Dean, and Chelsey Marie.

Don lived a life full of adventures. In his youth he excelled in basketball and continued to enjoy the game throughout much of his life. Everyone loved to guard him in church ball because he always showered before a game and spritzed on his signature Chanel cologne. He served an LDS mission in the Central British Mission in the U.K. that provided him with many stories and a lifetime love of spam, eggs and rice. He traveled much of Europe and was particularly fond of a beachside view on Maui.

If a man's measure of wealth is the good he does in the world, than Don was a wealthy man indeed.

Don was a man of great integrity, who always acted and spoke with kindness and honesty. He was steadfast in his loyalty to family, friends and business associates. He was a trusted advisor to many. He was a man who stood out amongst men, not just because of his perfectly coiffed hair or twice-ironed double-starched shirts, but because he was a man to measure men against.

Above all, he remained devoted to his loving wife, children and grandchildren whom he supported, respected and loved unconditionally and in whom he was most proud.

Don is survived by his wife, Linda Marie Shurtz Mathews; his children, Don (Michelle) Mathews, Rob (Amy) Mathews, and Chelsey (Dale Painter); his sister Mary Jane (Eric Ekstrom); his brothers Duane (Ana), Greg (Melanie) Mathews, Mathews; 8 grandchildren, and aunts; JoAnn Anderson and Martha Blackburn as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald J and Mary Mathews; and brothers John and Craig Mathews.

A viewing in his honor will be held in the LDS chapel located at 15040 South Mountainside Drive, Bluffdale Utah from 9:00 to 10:45 am Tuesday May 23, 2017. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am.
