Reed Lyman Reeve

1927 ~ 2014

Reed Lyman Reeve, age 86, died June 7, 2014, in Salt Lake City of Parkinson's disease.

He was born in Hinckley, Utah, on June 30, 1927, to John Reeve and Mary Lyman Reeve. He was the youngest of thirteen children.

His father died when he was seven years old. From the time he was thirteen, he supported his widowed mother, working at a pharmacy, a department store, and an ice plant while he was in junior high and high school.

He graduated from Provo High School, where he was student body president. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.

He married Dawn Hansen on March 20, 1959, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had two children.

He worked for the Department of Agriculture as a food and drug inspector for the state of Utah. He built his own business doing mergers and acquisitions. Later, he worked as Assistant Vice President and Investment Officer for Beneficial Life Insurance, and Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President of the Utah Motor Transport Association.

He was a lifelong member of the LDS Church and held numerous leadership positions. He was a guide on Temple Square for twenty years. He served a three-year mission to Holland after World War II. He spent seven years in the bishopric and twelve years as bishop of the Douglas Ward. Shortly after his release, he was given less than three weeks to move to England, where he served three years as president of the England Birmingham Mission.

He was a member of the High Council, and spent nine and a half years as president of the Salt Lake Central Stake. He was executive secretary and an adviser to the International Mission. He served seven years as a Regional Representative. After his release, he taught the Gospel Doctrine class for four years and thought it was one of the best jobs in the Church.

People loved to talk to him ‚ and to listen to him. He was a gifted speaker, singer, and scriptorian. He had the ability to make anyone feel better about themselves and their circumstances. He put others' interests ahead of his own and was generous with his time, money, and talents. He was a wonderful and much-loved father.

Survived by his wife, Dawn Hansen Reeve; his children, Mark Douglas (Shellie) Reeve of Valencia, California, and Rosemary Reeve of Salt Lake City, Utah; his grandchildren, Alexandra (Travis) Mar, Benjamin Reeve, and Meredith Reeve; his great-grandson, Christian Mar; his sister Margaret Soffe; and his brother Grant Reeve.

Preceded in death by his parents, his half-sister, Florence, his half-brothers, Bryan, Fenton, John, Mark, Dean, and Fred; his sisters Emma Olson and Adelia David; and his brother Platte Reeve.

Viewing June 12, 2014, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services 11 a.m. June 13, 2014, at Salt Lake Central Stake 11th Ward, 951 East 100 South, Salt Lake City Utah, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The family thanks the staff at Sunrise of Sandy and CareSource Hospice for their compassionate care during the last months of Dad's life.
