James William Romar

1930 ~ 2016

James \"Jim\" William Romar, age 85, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016, after living a fulfilling life.

Jim was born on October 8, 1930 in Los Angeles, CA but raised in Logan, UT, a place he loved and -- in spite of living in several locations -- he considered as his true home.

Rather than take a childhood job thinning sugar beets at a farm, he opted to clean golf clubs at Logan Country Club, quickly graduating to caddy and taking up the sport. A natural, he flourished at the game and continued to play until serving in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954, sailing around the Pacific.

He resumed golf after service, returning to Woodmar Country Club in Hammond, IN as assistant pro, then moving to Petoskey, MI to work as a head pro for five years. He returned to Woodmar in 1960 as head pro until his retirement in 1992. An adept mentor and teacher, he shared his love of golf with thousands and was well known for his saying \"Keep your head down and follow-through\" -- his mantra appropriate for golf and life in general.

A teacher even in retirement, Jim gave lessons at Sherwood Golf Course in Schererville, IN and wintered in Mesa, AZ for several years before moving to Mesa year-round. He returned to his beloved Utah in 2015.

Jim is survived by daughter Shari Romar (Mitchell Zykofsky) of Forest Hills, NY; daughter Kathy (Mark); sister Phyllis (Jim) Littlefield of Salt Lake City, UT; nephews Mark (Debbie) Littlefield of Park City, UT and Scott (Tonya) Littlefield and their children James, Michael, and Alicia of North Ogden, UT.

Guestbook/Condolences

Mr. Romar I can't thank you enough for giving me the best job of my life. Nothing I have done compares to the fun and friends you introduced me to as your “pro’s assistant” at Woodmar CC. Working at Woodmar for you was like a G-version of the movie “Caddy Shack”.

I remember Mr. Romar from when I played junior golf at Woodmar Country Club as a kid. Under his patient tutelage I even won the junior golf championship! Over the years I played from time to time and, now in my 50's, I've taken the game back up more often -- thanks to "Mr. Romar" -- my condolences, he is missed and remembered fondly!
