JoAnn D. Smullin 1942-2020

Born January 6, 1942 as JoAnn Carol Draney to George Glen Draney and Loretta Lorraine Proctor in Ogden, Utah. She was a 1960 graduate of Ben Lomond High School in Ogden. She attended Stevens Henager College and graduated from the Secretarial Finishing Course in 1961, with recognition in a "Shorthand Speed Award". She attended Weber State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Strayer College in Washington D.C.

She worked five years at the Utah Highway Department Right of Way division, and one year as a stenographer. While attending BYU she accepted an opportunity to work for one year as a secretary for the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia. Throughout her career she enjoyed thirty-nine years as a legal secretary for several law firms in both Washington, D.C. and Salt Lake City.

JoAnn met and married the love of her life, Andy Smullin on January 6, 1984. She was blessed with one biological son. JoAnn dearly loved being a mother and stepmother. She took an active interest in all of the children in her life and had a deep love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

JoAnn participated in Drama Club, performed in many productions, enjoyed ushering at the Capitol Theater, and was in the process of writing a novel. She participated in a pageant where she was awarded the title of \"Miss Tall Washington D.C.\" in 1972. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving at times as Relief Society teacher, sacrament chorister, nursery teacher, speech director, and visiting teacher. As a couple, JoAnn and her husband Andy served for over two years as mission leaders in the church addiction program. Her love for helping others during her mission gave her great joy and happiness.

Her passing occurred January 30th, 2020, in the arms of her loved ones, after complications arising from prolonged illness. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother, a niece Krista Keogh, and a grandniece, Hope Keogh. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, two sisters, a son, and five stepchildren. Also, twenty grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 5th, at 1155 N 1200 W, SLC, UT in the south chapel of the Rose Park 7th Ward from 11:00am. Guests arriving early will have an opportunity for viewing from 9:30am-10:45am. An evening viewing is also available at the Rose Park 7th Ward on Tuesday, February 4th, from 6-8pm. Following funeral service, interment and grave dedication will take place at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 N St E, SLC, UT.

When we got your Christmas card returned, I typed in your name and found out Joann passed away in January of this year. We are so sorry for your loss Andy. We are sorry we were not able to be there for you. We know the Lord will bless and comfort you even in these times of trials. May you continue to have joy in your life.
