Darlene Cowan Butler

1923 ~ 2018

Darlene Cowan Butler passed away Nov. 9, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Darlene was born May 1, 1923 to Glade and Alta Leetham Cowan. She married John R. (Jack) Butler June 10, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died in 2013. She loved her Heavenly Father, Children and Grandchildren.

During WWII, Darlene took a year away from College and worked at the Oakland, CA Army Depot shipping ordinance items to various locations in the Pacific. Darlene graduated from BYU in 1946. She worked as a secretary and a school teacher. Darlene held many positions in the LDS Church. She also served for 23 years as a hostess in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. She was a member of Authors Club and a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed making ceramics and gave them to friends and family. She sang in the Jay Welch Chorale and the Choral Arts Society for many years. She cherished all the friends she made in all these activities. Darlene loved to travel and visited many places in the world.

She is survived by her daughter Carolyn (George) Lyman, sons Boyd (Jacque) Butler, James (Laurie) Butler and John (Greta) Butler, 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many step grand and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lorna Pierce and Maurene Miller, son-in-law Steven Ostler and daughter-in-law Janice Butler.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at the Emigration Ward, 589 East 18th Avenue. Visitations will be Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and Thursday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Ward. Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
