Robert Hilton Garside

1942 ~ 2019

Robert (Bob) H. Garside, age 76, passed away unexpectedly in Salt Lake City, UT on Tuesday, August 13th 2019 while undergoing treatment for congestive heart failure. He was born November 30th, 1942 to Lela A. and Hilton L. Garside. He shared this birthday with two of his siblings. Robert enlisted in the Air Force in 1961 where he proudly served until his honorable discharge in February 1967. In February of 1966 Robert married Sandra P. Butterfield with whom he had three children; later divorced. Following his service Robert was employed at Hill Air Force Base where he retired after more than 25 years of employment. He was a crew chief for many air force fighter planes notably the F-4 Phantom and F-16 Falcon. Bob loved airplanes and would share his knowledge whenever he was given the opportunity. He always had bits and pieces of the planes around the house and we often joked that he would soon be able to build his own. Being a mechanic was more than his job, it was his passion. He was into cars and worked as a mechanic professionally for several years after retiring from HAFB. Anyone who knew him knew his passion extended into his home garage which came to be known as "Pops Garage". Anytime anyone had a problem or needed help with their vehicle, Robert was always first to offer his time and expertise to troubleshoot and solve the problem. He was a natural problem solver and if it was broken, he would always try to fix it. He enjoyed shopping at his magic market (NPS) where he would find treasures of all kinds. Every time we visited dad we never went home empty handed. He also enjoyed taking his metal detector out to see what treasures he could find. If only beer tabs were worth anything. He loved shirts with pockets. The more pockets on the shirt, the more you saw him in that shirt, pockets full. Dad loved helping others. He was our family mechanic, tax man, and with his vast knowledge he was our all-around go to guy. At one time he had a love of photography. This hobby has left us with treasured memories of the past.

Robert loved his three grandchildren Matt, Ryan and Kiera. He proudly supported Matt in all his Special Olympic events and they both shared a love of Cher. At his young age of 76 he would get on the floor and play Lego's with Ryan and Kiera. He loved teaching them new things.

Robert is survived by daughter Wendy (John) and sons Troy (Tammy) and Kevin (Rose) and his three grandchildren. "Bobby" is also survived by siblings William, Bonita, Blair and Sandra and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, stepfather Clayton Robertson, sister Bette, brothers; Brent and James and Earl Robertson.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 21st, 2019 at Larkin Funeral home at 3688 West 12600 South, Riverton, Utah. A viewing will be held from 10-11AM. Services will begin at 11. Robert will be laid to rest at Camp Williams at 1:00 pm

Words cannot express the void we will have in our lives without you dad. Who will we argue about politics with, discuss our cars with and will NPS now go out of business? You will be deeply missed!
