Verl Rolfson Greene

1917 ~ 2016

Verl Rolfson Greene peacefully graduated this life on May 20, 2016 at home surrounded by many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was born March 26, 1917 in Raymond, Alberta Canada to Francis Bent and Emily Caroline Rolfson.She was the seventh of eight children, and always had a very close relationship with her parents and siblings.

In 1898, her parents were called by the Apostle John Taylor to settle and serve a five-year mission in Southern Alberta Canada.Her childhood was spent helping out on the family farm.She attended Raymond Public School and Raymond High School and attended BYU for a year and a half.In the fall of 1939 she left BYU to return home to care for her ailing father and to help run the family farm with her younger brother Varold.She worked at the Raymond Sugar Beet Factory and The Raymond Mercantile.After World War II, she moved to British Columbia to work at the Pioneer Mines cooking for the miners.She eventually moved to Salt Lake City where she was employed by Montgomery Ward and met her future husband, Jay Lyle Greene. They were married September 12, 1948 in Salt Lake City.After their wedding, she began working at LDS Hospital as a certified nursing assistant, where she made history being the first woman to work past her sixth month of pregnancy.In August 1949, Verl and Lyle purchased their home in the Canyon Rim area where they raised their five children.

Verl held many church callings.She was aSundaySchool and Primary teacher,SundaySchool secretary, Visiting Teaching supervisor and a Visiting Teacher, a calling she held until she passed away.She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, as well as an election judge.She taught herself how to crochet, took an art class and was an avid reader.

In 1983 she was called to serve in the Washington D.C. mission.Verl had a very strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, especially the principle of tithing.Her faith helped her through many difficult times including the illnesses and deaths of her husband and daughter.

Verl is survived by four of her five children: Kevin (Claire), LeAnne (Marty) Wojciechowski, Laurel (Michael) Herd and Randall (Laurie), 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by just about everybody!Most importantly by her husband Jay Lyle, daughter Sheryl, parents, brothers and sisters, and her beloved horse "Pacer" as well as many extended family and friends.

We love you Mom, you showed us everyday how to fight the good fight and what it means to endure to the end. Have a wonderful reunion!

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 27th , at the Canyon Rim 2ndWard Chapel 3000 South Grace Street (3100 East) at11:00 AM.Viewings for Verl will be held Thursday May 26thfrom6 ‚ 8 PMat the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary 2350 East 1300 South and one hour prior to the services.
