Eleanor Hulbert Barker

1924 ~ 2019

Our lovely mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Eleanor Hulbert Barker passed away on January 14, 2019 at the age of 94. She was born in Salt Lake City on September 22, 1924, the daughter of Arthur Davies Hulbert and Effie Lena Erickson Hulbert. The fourth of six children, she was raised in a close and loving family. Throughout her life she regaled her children and grandchildren with joyful memories of her growing-up years. She graduated from South High School and attended the University of Utah, where she affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma. Eleanor loved dance in all its many forms, whether classical, Big Band or ballroom dancing. She danced with The San Francisco Ballet Company for a time and then returned to the University of Utah where she met the love of her life, James Taylor Barker. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 2, 1947. James and Eleanor were blessed with the birth of their son, James Scott Barker, who passed away on April 22, 1966, and their daughter, Susan. Together they enjoyed a loving family relationship.

It was in 1951 that Eleanor and Jim moved to Washington, DC where Jim attended Georgetown Law School and then pursued a career with the National Labor Relations Board in both Washington, DC and San Francisco. Eleanor, who had a special love of working with children, kept busy teaching ballet classes in addition to raising their family. While living in Bethesda, Maryland, Eleanor served in several different callings but especially enjoyed serving as the Stake Young Women's President of the Washington, DC Stake. She rounded out her busy schedule playing tennis and golf. They enjoyed their relationships with their neighbors, business associates, and members of the Chevy Chase Ward until they relocated to the West Coast.

After some time living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim and Eleanor settled in Coronado, California, where they were close enough to enjoy the life experiences and maturing of their four grandchildren, Laurie (Mitch) Moyers, James (Melissa) White, Whitney (Jeffrey) Norman, and Patrick (Abby) White. Eleanor loved children and was so happy to welcome to the family her great-grandchildren, Alex, Julie, Katie, Jackson, and Miranda Moyers, Natalie, Annette, Blake, Cameron and Taylor White, Katelyn, Jane, Emily and Will Norman, and Owen and Maisy White.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Susan (Ronald) White, and her aforementioned grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her son, Scott, her parents, and her siblings, Richard, Bunne, Carl, Jerry, and Patricia.
