Norman Edson Packer

1933 ~ 2016

Norman Edson Packer, 82, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on May 29, 2016, due to Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Norm was born in Miami, Arizona, on July 22, 1933, to Edson and Daphne Packer. He spent his childhood years in Carlsbad, New Mexico where he had many grand adventures. At 15, he moved with his family to Lima, Peru. He graduated from a private high school, Colegio Santa Maria, with the Peruvian elite. This defining experience cemented his love of learning and appreciation for other cultures. He remained bi-lingual his entire life.

Norm attended the University of Utah, where he graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering. He met his lifetime sweetheart Darlene Heward. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 21, 1956, and enjoyed sixty years together. They are an enduring example of true love and devotion to all those who know them.

Norm served in the Air Force and attained the rank of Captain, where he was trained how to monitor and repair complicated telephone and radio equipment.

A brilliant businessman, Norm founded the independent manufacturer's rep company, Electrodyne. He grew it to be the top organization of its kind in the west, with offices in Denver and Salt Lake. In a tough business, he earned a reputation as a hard-working family man possessing impeccable ethics and honesty.

He served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and touched many people with his true belief in the Savior, particularly the youth of the single adult ward. Anyone who met Norm was struck by his keen intellect, natural curiosity and his ability to connect with just about anyone. His children and grandchildren have been greatly impacted by his lifelong example of learning and accomplishment. He will be dearly missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Faye Jean Gregory, and his brother, Jimmy (Kathie Smith). He is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene, and children, Terry (Elena), Julie Wissler (Jim) and Shauna Dansie (Kevin), seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Friday, June 3, from 6 - 8 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, and the following day, Saturday, June 4, at 10:30 to 11:45 at the Fortuna Ward, 4407 Fortuna Way, SLC. The funeral will follow at12:00 pm. Norm will be interred at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mausoleum.
