Frank Tsosie

1927 ~ 2014

Frank Tsosie, 86, known affectionately as "daddy," passed away on January 20, 2014, in Hemet, California. He was born on December 28, 1927 in Whitehorse Lake, New Mexico to George Tsosie and Mary Sandoval (both deceased). He married Cecelia Elizabeth Martin in Whitehorse Lake, New Mexico.

Frank worked on the railroad to support his family. As part of his work, he traveled extensively across the United States, from Washington state to Chicago to Arkansas. Frank did not have a formal education, yet he learned to read and write, using a dictionary for support. He also taught himself basic math skills. In his younger years, he was a sheepherder and even trained horses. He was a self-taught mechanic, carpenter, and stone mason—he planned and built his own house.

Frank was devoted to his traditional Navajo religion. He used herbs in his worship and made sure he was always in harmony with life. He was a great storyteller of the Old Ways.

Frank is survived by his brother, Willie Tsosie, daughters Patricia (Manuel Chavez), Mary (Greg Jensen), Lucinda (Kyle Backman), stepson Francis Toledo (Sarah), and grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his wife Cecelia, son Patrick Tsosie, stepson Virgil Toledo, parents, and siblings.
