Jack Edward Jarvie

1928 ~ 2019

Jack Edward Jarvie, 91, quietly passed away in his family home on Thursday, July 25, 2019. He was the second child born to John and Jennie Jarvie, on May 16, 1928, in rural Gunnison, Utah. His family traveled to Gunnison in a horse-drawn wagon just prior to his birth, and then returned to the family farm in Draper, Utah, where Jack grew up with brothers Ronald, Raymond "Scott", Thearn, and sister Gloria "Fay". Jack was one of the last of the "Greatest Generation", serving with honor in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, and participating in the astonishing advances of the 20th Century.

Jack's father immigrated as a small boy with his parents and grandparents from Bathgate, Scotland through Ellis Island in 1896, later his father purchased the family farm in Draper, where they raised bees, chickens, and other birds, and grew vegetables and fruits, from the time of the Great Depression to the present. Jack felt a deep love and attachment to the family home.

Jack also loved education and studied many different subjects in college, earning a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from the University of Utah. He shared his knowledge as a gifted teacher in the Granite School District and at the BYU Extension, teaching hundreds of Salt Lake Valley students to make pottery and other arts. He is well-known for his talented artistry in pottery, jewelry, sculpture, drawing, painting and wood working.

Jack met Wanda Gibson when they both worked for Highland Dairy. He proposed to her on a picnic in the spring of 1950 by hiding an engagement ring in an Easter basket. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 15, 1950, and were inseparable for 62 years, until her death in 2013. Together, they raised a family of ten children (five girls and five boys) in their Draper home.

Jack was a faithful member of the LDS Church holding many positions including serving at the Jordan River Temple. He also had a true western American spirit, loving to camp, fish, hunt, and explore in the great outdoors.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife Wanda, a son Daryl, his parents and his brothers Ronald, Scott and Thearn. He is lovingly remembered by their family, including their children, David Jarvie (Kathi), Teresa Jarvie, Grant Jarvie, Yvonne Jarvie (Brian), Warren Jarvie, Cynthia Jarvie, Marilyn Manzullo (Joel), Clint Jarvie, and Rachel Jarvie; their grandchildren, Amy Knight (Gordon), Robert Jarvie (Arianna), Jason Manzullo (Danielle) and Alexandra Olson (Harley); as well as five great-granddaughters.
