Gayla Dawn Canfield Babbitt

1945 ~ 2016

Gayla Dawn Canfield Babbitt returned home on April 19, 2016. She was born April 11, 1945 to Donald Canfield and Janet Smithen.

Gayle worked at various jobs over the years until her health relegated her to a wheel chair. Prior to that, she spent 10 years keeping the Check City building on 21st South looking presentable. She took up the hobby of knitting and made all sorts of baby blankets for grandkids, nieces and nephews. On good days she could walk outside for a break and take care of her little dog Ginger, which was her service animal during bouts with anxiety.

A highlight of her life was meeting Crystal Gale, Tammy Wynette and Little Dickey at the Grand ‘Ol Opry in Tennessee. She worked in California with her first husband and then in Las Vegas, where a niece had a home. She traveled across country with her second husband who was a truck driver.

Being at home most of the day, opened her way to volunteer to be a Neighborhood Watch Commander. As she would report suspicious activities with consistency, the South Salt Lake Police Department could send more patrols in to the area.

Her corneas were donated that others to see. The family would like to thank staffs of Harmony Care, St Marks Hospital and Landmark Hospital for the wonderful care they provided.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Monday, April 25, 2016 at the LDS Chapel, 3805 South Main Street in Salt Lake City. A visitation will begin at 1:00 pm prior to the services.
