Gary Lee Hicks, 74, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones, on September 16, 2016, where he succumbed to liver failure.
Gary married his sweetheart, Robin Olsen Nemelka, in 1967. Together they raised 6 children: son Jeffrey Nemelka (Julie), son Mark Nemelka (Dawn), daughter Mindi Wright (Christian), son Russell Hicks (Brooke), Pamela Jill (deceased), son Joseph Hicks (Sydney), and daughter Judith Rowley (Randy). Gary and Robin have 22 grandchildren and 15 1/2 great-grandchildren. Gary loved his family very much and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
Gary was born June 4th, 1942 in Provo, Utah. He grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School. Gary went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Utah and a Master's Degree from Brigham Young University. Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Gary lived a kind and selfless life. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gary served an honorable mission in the East Central States. He worked as a Seminary Teacher for 38 years and spent many years serving as a Scout Master. He loved working with the youth and had the opportunity to impact the lives of thousands of youth throughout the years. Gary was a caring, humble and a positive influence to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed but his influence and memory will live on.
Gary was truly a GOOD man.
A visitation will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, on Friday, September 23rd from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A visitation will also be held at the Riverside Stake Center, 1148 West 500 North, on Saturday, September 24th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.
