Max Gordon Madsen

1939 ~ 2018

Max Gordon Madsen, Jr. passed from this life at the University of Michigan Hospital on August 10, 2018 with his wife and family by his side. He was 78 years old. He is the son of Max G. Madsen and Elaine Hansen. He grew up in Salt Lake City with four siblings, Ronald, Wayne, Marilyn and Bruce. He married Karen Jensen in 1961. Together they reared three children, Brian Clark (Lisa Ridlon), Michelle Spencer (Scott Updyke) and Gordon Scott (Shawna Edwards). They are proud grandparents of eight grandchildren.

Max lived a productive and enriching life. He earned a B.S. in engineering at the University of Utah and an MBA at the University of Washington. He worked most of his life for Bechtel Corporation to prepare proposals for new business and schedule production for work in process. Max worked steadily to earn an Eagle Scout Award while still twelve years old. He has been a contributing member of the Boy Scouts of Washtenaw County for his forty years of living in Ann Arbor. He was a member of the Interfaith Roundtable of Washtenaw County. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Musical Arts as its Treasurer.

Max was deeply honored to serve for five years as a lay minister (bishop) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully and honorably and worked tirelessly to meet the needs of his congregation.

Max was a collector of coins and stamps. He enjoyed researching his ancestry. His favorite activity in retirement has been to travel with his wife to many countries on five continents.

Max was known as a very nice gentleman. He willingly served those in need. He was generous without seeking accolades, intellectual without being haughty, and he listened to others without being judgmental. Funeral services took place on August 18 in Ann Arbor. His interment will be near his childhood home of Salt Lake City where he will be placed next to his parents.
