Urbane Seer Child Jr. age 88, passed away Sunday evening, August 2, 2015 peacefully at his home. Born November 1, 1926, the son of Urbane Seer Child Sr. and Lillian Otley Child.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Joan Buhler King Child, his children: Urbane Stanley Child (JoAnn), Claudia Child Lambourne (Kim), Scott McMullin Child (Gaylynn), Leita Evelyn Child Farnsworth (Scott), Lynn Vere Child (Charlene); Karen King Loulias (Mike) , Karla King Matheson (Jack), and Krehl King (Debbie ); 34 - grandchildren, 90 - great grandchildren, 1- great - great grandchild, and brother Dennis Urry (Ruth ).
He is predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Cherrill McMullin Child, a brother Richard Otley Child, and sisters Florence Brown, Beatrice McGiven Bradshaw, Mary Roberts and Leita Joy Child.
Urbane graduated from West High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country in the summer of 1944.
After his military service, his passion for mechanics and Chevrolet, led him to begin his career as an auto mechanic. This took him to California for a brief period, but he soon settled in Utah to live and work. Urbane worked for several local car dealerships as a Mechanic and Service Writer. He owned and operated service stations in the Bountiful and Salt Lake City areas. He spent the latter part of his career as owner/operator of Child's Automotive Service, in the Rose Park area, where he provided great service to the local community. He made many friends in the process. The Rose Park area was his home for 60 years, where he raised his family and lived until his passing.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as Bishop, Branch President, High Councilor, and many other callings ‚ all of which he loved. He enjoyed his service in the Church, and the many people he came to know and love. Because of his faithful and valiant dedication, he gained a strong testimony of His Savior and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He emulated his testimony by word and example, teaching his posterity.
He loved his involvement with the youth of the Rose Park 7th ward and their annual "YESSIR" boating trips to Flaming Gorge Reservoir. He also enjoyed boating and camping with family and friends.
Urbane enjoyed restoring cars ‚ some of which he did in his spare time as a hobby for personal enjoyment, and others which he restored and sold ‚ gaining satisfaction in the restoration process. In a related hobby, he collected license plates from all over the nation, and displayed them proudly on his garage wall.
Urbane was a hard-working, no nonsense kind of man, who loved his family dearly. He went out of his way to see that his family had close relationships with their maternal grandparents and relatives in Southern Utah and areas out of state. In recent family events he was heard to say "Family ‚ that's what it's all about". He was proud of his family and heritage.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am at the Rose Park North Stake Center, located at 1155 North 1200 West Salt Lake City, Utah (Rose Park 7th ward)
A viewing for friends and family will be held at that same location, from 6:00 ‚ 8:00 pm, on Friday, August 7, 2015. An additional Viewing will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 9:45 ‚ 10:45 am, prior to the funeral service.
Interment will be at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah immediately following the Funeral Services.
