Laurel Kay Hugie McClain

1937 ~ 2018

Laurel Kay (Hugie) McClain passed away on May 23, 2018 at her Salt Lake City home. The daughter of Albert Hugie Jr. and Edna Riggs Hugie, she graduated from Logan High School, and received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Utah State University. While in college, she met her husband Thomas C. McClain. During their marriage they had residences in Logan, Utah, Cupertino, California, Buhl and Sun Valley, Idaho and currently in Salt Lake City. Laurel was a devoted mother to her three children Kristen, April and Alexander.

Known to be a woman of grace and elegance, she regularly modeled for Arent's - a Salt Lake City Furrier and Women's Clothing Store. She later became a Doncaster Fashion Consultant with her sister, Jan Thorpe. Her aesthetic style was central to her gracious home interior design and architectural judgement. She was a member of the Utah Ballet Guild, served on the Management Board for the Northpoint Estates Community Association, a member of several social and civic groups, and was an active part of the PTA. Some of her favorite life memories centered on time spent at their Sun Valley condo where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved gardening, was an avid bridge player, enjoyed reading books, periodicals, and playing golf.

Laurel cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren and siblings. We respected and admired her keen intellect, wit, and her ability to analyze and communicate ideas with candor and credibility. She once remarked "when seeking the life you want, don't miss the life you have." Her insight and integrity revealed kindness, humble honor, and moral convictions.

She will be greatly missed by her family, including daughter Kristen McClain of Salt Lake City; son Alex McClain (Katie) and grandson Alexander of Reston, Virginia; daughter April McClain-Delaney (Congressman John Delaney) of Potomac, Maryland along with granddaughters Summer, Brooke, Lily and Grace; sister Jan Thorpe (Greg), nephews Ryan and Eric; brother Roy Hugie, nephews Lucas and Clint; and brother Eldon Hugie, nieces Susan, Patti and nephews Michael, David, and Bob. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. McClain, and by two brothers, Donavon and Peter Hugie.

The family welcomes those who wish to honor Laurel's memory at Larkin Mortuary (260 East South Temple) on June 1st from 5-7 p.m. A private buffet reception will follow at Grand America. A graveside service and interment will take place at noon on June 2nd at the Logan City Cemetery.
