Alice Anne Goodsell Shaffer left mortality to be reunited with her husband and other loved ones on April 29, 2023, at the age of 90. She was born June 9, 1932, to her beloved parents Clayton Hoopes and Thora B Funk Goodsell.

Alice married Marlin Ralph Shaffer, Jr. for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple on December 13, 1952, and is survived by her children Stephen, Lori, Susan, Andrea, John, 16 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, precious daughters Carol and Jayne, sweet grandsons Matthew and Ian, her sister Pat, and her devoted parents.

She always said she had an idyllic childhood with family and friends exploring the fields and hills of the Highland Park area of Los Angeles, CA. She also liked to share fond memories of their frequent family trips to the Franklin, Idaho area to visit extended family.

After high school graduation, she worked for one year at a dental office prior to attending the Los Angeles County General Hospital School of Nursing. She felt very blessed to have the experience and training acquired from this nursing program.

Alice had many talents, ranging from home building/repairs to sewing, cooking/canning, quilting, and gardening in addition to raising seven active children. Her life was full of service, whether it was bringing a meal to a person in need, caring for the sick or otherwise homebound, or teaching home repair to those who were eager to learn from the skills she learned as a child by watching her father or from her own research and study.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with a strong testimony of her Savior. Her devotion to Him never wavered, even during very difficult experiences. She served in the temple with her husband for many years. Much of her life centered around family, family history, and temple work, for which her posterity is extremely grateful.

Per Alice’s request, an intimate graveside service will be held Thursday, May 4 at 4:00 pm at the Salt Lake City Cemetery (near the intersection of Cedar and Cyprus). The service will also be broadcast via Zoom for those who would like to attend virtually. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Church’s Humanitarian or Missionary funds.

To the reader from Alice’s children: “Mom wants you to know she’s just fine.”

Dear Shaffers, We loved watching your family grow when we all lived on Hubbard Avenue. Your mother and father were valiant, sweet, talented and so kind. They were so proud of each of their children. We send our love and sympathy at this tender time.
