Alvaro “Gordo” Gomez Jr. passed away on Wednesday January 6, 2021 at 8:48 pm at the age of 52 after an intense fight with COVID-19. He left true to his fashion listening to Ice T’s song Colors, holding the hands of his two youngest daughters Victoria and Mia. While he may no longer be here with us physically, his loved ones will honor him by cruising with the windows down and the music up, offering a helping hand to anyone in need and cracking a joke to liven up any situation.

Alvaro was born to Elia Gonzalez and Alvaro Gomez on November 5, 1968. He worked at the historic Salt Lake City restaurant, The New Yorker, for over 15 years, working his way up from a dishwasher all the way to a sous chef. After leaving the restaurant he began a career in construction building custom homes in Park City. From 2005 on, he worked in the field of safety management, making a big impact in this field in Northern California where he taught companies to put “Safety First”. He was passionate in his career and was a loyal, dedicated member of the team at Safety Compliance Management where he will be deeply missed.

Alvaro loved fishing, the color orange, Diet Coke and his children in no particular order. Batman was his favorite superhero but for his children Mia, Victoria and Alexandrea, he was their lifelong hero.

Alvaro possessed a larger-than-life personality. With his deep laugh, wide grin and strong voice he made an impact wherever he went. A loving father, he raised his daughters to be independent. Between teaching them to change their own brakes, throw a ball and build a fence, he made sure they would never need to rely on anyone. He made sure to always help his daughters and everyone he came into contact with from strangers to neighbors, family and friends. Whether you needed a home renovation, a big laugh, sage advice or help with car troubles, Alvaro always showed up when you needed him. He had a way of putting people at ease with his comedic charm.

He loved his family, was proud of his children and asked the best of everyone. Our lives are better off and much more entertaining for having known him. When Alvaro departed for that fishing trip in the sky, he left behind his daughters Alexandrea Monahan, Victoria Gomez and Mia Drake. His mother Elia Gonzalez and siblings Gloria, Alicia, Angel, Chino, Marcos, and Jessica, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Alvaro will be honored with a private celebration of life on February 6, 2021. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his name to the American Diabetes Association.

Guestbook/Condolences

I am truly saddened to hear of Gordo's passing. My sincere condolences go out to his family and his three beautiful daughters. I had the pleasure of working with Gordo for about 15 years at The New Yorker. I will remember him as a good friend who would always offer a talented helping hand with almost any project, and make me laugh with his sarcastic sense of humor. He will be sorely missed!
