Barbara Ann Salin

Devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Barbara Ann Salin, 71, of Stansbury Park, Utah, passed away peacefully in her home on December 30, 2023, in the presence of her family, after a valiant and courageous fight with Merkel Cell carcinoma and other related health challenges.

She was born to incredible parents, the late Courtland William Fiero, Sr. and Helen Bratlie Fiero on September 30, 1952, in Canandaigua, New York. The family moved cross-country to California when Barbara was young to escape the snowy winters. She graduated from Westchester High School in 1970 and received an Associate of Arts degree in Fashion Design a couple of years later.

Barbara married in 1976 in Los Angeles, California. The family moved to Sanger and then Fresno, California having two children and divorcing in 1988. In 1990, Barbara married Douglas Salin at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple in Los Angeles, California and resided in Clovis, California until 2018 when they retired to Stansbury Park, Utah. Doug had 3 children, expanding their blended family to 5 kids.

Barbara is survived by her children and step-children: Amanda Terry and Leslie Terry, both of Utah; Shawn Salin (Jalene), Scott Salin, and Melanie Kilcorse (Jerry), all of California. She is also survived by her siblings, Linda Hilsdale of California; Betsy Koszut (Eric) of Tennessee; Courtland Fiero, Jr. of Utah; and Carolyn Fiero of Florida, along with 4 step-grandchildren: Seth, Devan, Faith, and Bella; a niece, Jaxs Fiero of California; a nephew, Daniel; and a great niece, Kimerly; step-sister-in-law, Patti Karsevar, of California; and step-nieces and nephews of California: Kent, Wendy, Heather (Michael), and Matt. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Courtland Fiero, Sr. and Helen Bratlie Fiero; brother-in-law, Jim Hilsdale; step-brothers-in-law, Phil Salin and Jay Karsevar.

She had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ and loved serving and doing for others. Barbara would often say that she received her strong faith from her father and charity from her mother. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tasmania, Australia and lived her testimony daily. Barbara had a devout conviction of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Plan of Salvation. Because she and Doug were sealed in the temple, she knew their family would be together for eternity.

Throughout her life, she was the happiest when she was creating, making, or baking something for others. Whether sharing her prize-winning jam or other tasty baked goods with neighbors and friends to delivering roses from her garden, she always looked for ways to uplift those around her. Barbara and Doug loved giving back to their friends and neighbors by hosting their epic Christmas party for over 30 years. Many laughs, hilarious and memorable moments, and always, an impressive food buffet.

Barbara was passionate about her family and living life. She enjoyed learning about her family history, researching new ancestors. She didn’t let health challenges, including a kidney transplant, stop her from making cherished memories and volunteering time in the community to educate about organ donation. Even during her darkest times with cancer, she would find ways to brighten people’s day at the hospital. Barbara said she always felt more like herself when she was doing something for someone else.

The best advice she said she could give “if you are having a tough time with life and feeling down, get out of yourself and do something to help someone else and you will feel better.” The world has lost a remarkable human being and heaven has gained an angel.

Viewings will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and Monday, January 8, 2024 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel (417 Benson Road, Stansbury Park, Utah). A funeral service will be held at the same location on January 8, 2023 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. followed by the grave dedication at the Stansbury Cemetery (132 Brigham Road, Stansbury Park, Utah). In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made to the University of Utah Transplant Buddy Fund, DonorConnect, or Merkel Cell cancer research.

Barbara’s family is very grateful to the capable doctors, nurses, and medical staff at Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah hospital for their tireless efforts and to so many dear family and friends who supported her through the most challenging times of her life.
