Beth Reynolds Sundstrom

1923 ~ 2021

Listen to Previously Recorded Service

Beth Reynolds Sundstrom died peacefully, December 5, 2021, in Salt Lake City, at age 98. Born in Salt Lake City, January 11, 1923, to Marlton Lowry Reynolds and Rosa Smolders Bills Reynolds, Beth attended school at Uintah and Roosevelt Junior High, and in 1940 graduated from East High and LDS Business College. She served as Associate Editor at each of these schools' newspapers. She loved to write, and did so her entire life. Family and friends fondly recall her stories, letters, and remembrances.

At age 18 Beth took a full-time office job for the Dept. of the Interior, then in 1941 worked for the War Dept. at Fort Douglas until 1947. There she met Dale Alvin Sundstrom. They married in 1945 and raised 3 children (Eric, Karen, David). She loved hosting family get-togethers over Dutch-oven roasts and homemade bread.

Beth returned to work at Fort Douglas in 1961 to support the family while Dale earned a PhD. In 1965 they moved to Santa Barbara, California, where Beth worked as an Executive Secretary at the University of California. In 1970 the family came back to Salt Lake City. Beth worked briefly at the University of Utah, then in 1973 returned to Fort Douglas as Secretary for the Defense Investigative Service. She won awards and commendations for service to "her" Special Agents until her first (medical) retirement, 1988. She went back to work at the University of Utah Museum of Natural History and retired again in 1996 at age 73.

For many years Beth enjoyed quilting and made countless quilts for family and friends.

A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Beth loved the Wasatch Ward, and appreciated members visiting her at home when she was unable to attend services in the chapel.

Beth is preceded in death by husband Dale, brother Richard Reynolds, sister Ruth Reynolds Yeaman, brother-in-law Jack Yeaman, daughter Karen S. Mitchell, son David J. Sundstrom, grandson Jason Mitchell, and many friends. Beth is survived by sister-in-law Iris Reynolds, son Eric Sundstrom, daughters-in-law Mary Sundstrom and Julie Sundstrom, son-in-law Allen Mitchell, 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her.

The family thanks the staff of Life Care Center of Salt Lake City, and Beth's hospice providers, for the excellent care she received, and niece Christine Reynolds Henderson for comforting Beth in her last days.

In lieu of flowers Beth requested donations to Primary Children's Hospital, 100 N Mario Capecchi Dr., Salt Lake City, UT 84113.

Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah, December 20, 2021. A celebration of Beth’s life will be held in June 2022. Visit www.LarkinMortuary.com for updates on the online obituary or to share condolences or memories with the family.

Guestbook/Condolences

Grandma Beth was the kindest person I have ever known. She never had a mean word to say about anyone. She loved me like I was family. I am a better person having spent time with her learning how to bake bread and tell stories. She was an angel here on Earth and I know she has a special place in heaven. My condolences to her family on their loss.

Beth was a wonderful neighbor when we lived next door in the early 80's - the sweetest, kindest person you can possibly imagine. It was so good to have had her in my family's lives then and for years after. Rest in peace Beth, we'll sure miss you!

I have such good memories of Beth -- such a warm, caring person. She was our receptionist at the Utah Museum of Natural History for several years and we loved her. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Sundstrom family,
My condolences on the passing of your beautiful mother. She was such a kind and special person to our family. I'm sure my mother Lois Lambert and Beth are having a grand reunion. They were such great friends since elementary school until the passing of my mother in 2016. They were always checking up on each other and had each other to support and lean on in times of trial as well as joyous times.
May our Lord provide peace and comfort during this difficult time of grieving.
Sincerely,
Roseann Lambert Hnath
