  • “Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it,” was one of the many pieces of wisdom Mom shared with her five children. The 9th of 13 children, she knew both how to dish as well as take. Born Nov. 10, 1932, to Oscar and Susie Hunsaker, Betty Jean Hunsaker Bryner, 88, died May 24, 2021 in Millcreek, Utah. She married Norman K. Bryner in 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. Being born during the Depression helped shape Mom into a strong woman, wife, and mother. She was very organized, loved life-long learning, and maintained a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout her life. She taught her children the importance of service, a strong work ethic, and respect for our elders. She loved to laugh, so much so that once Dad said, “Betty are we here to have fun or play the [card] game?” Of course, that just made us laugh harder.

Betty was put to the test during Dad’s years as an Army Chaplain, as they moved around the states and as a single parent when he was stationed three times in Asia. While those were difficult years for her, she honed her skills as a mother as well as served in many positions in church. She greatly missed her mother and sisters during those times and was happy to return to “Zion.”

Education was important to Betty. She earned a Master’s degree and enjoyed teaching elementary school for thirteen years.

Preceded in death by husband Norm in 1996, son Norman (Kelly) in 2010, and infant great-grandson, Jayce Norman Bryner (Norman III & Nicole) in 2019. Betty is survived by four daughters: Kerrie (Jack) Baughman, Peggy (Paul) Hughes, Kimberly (Dave) Sessions, and Penny (Damien) Gambill. She has 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Betty is survived by only two siblings- Irwin and Grant.

A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2. Viewing at 10 a.m. prior to funeral at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, Winder 4th Ward, 951 E. 3825 S. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
