Billie Lockwood

1932 ~ 2023

A beloved daughter of God, Billie Duella Capes Lockwood, left this life peacefully on the morning of October 13, 2023. Billie loved life and was always actively engaged. She was a wonderful wife and mother, devoting her all to loving and caring for her family.

Billie was born on May 7, 1932 to William Charles and Delorah Marie Wood Capes in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was raised there and attended East High and the University of Utah. She was introduced to Roland Gene Lockwood by a mutual friend. They dated until he was called into the service. He was stationed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he attended signal school with the U. S. Army. He asked his sweetheart to marry him. She traveled to New Jersey, where they were married by the camp Chaplain on April 27, 1951. Billie was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ on August 16, 1955. Gene and Billie were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 27, 1967. They were the parents of five children.

Billie served in her Ward Relief Society for several years as the Work Director. She taught the sisters many crafts and skills. The most memorable of these were how to make acrylic grape clusters. She was very talented and in the last decades of her life, she magnified her God given talents. She created pictures in oil paint, water colors, and chalk. She made many beautiful leaded stained glass decorations. She gained a talent and love for ceramics from her mother and she made many varied and beautiful pieces. She also could sew well and taught that skill to her daughters.

Billie was a great mother, always doing things to help and encourage her children. Raising her family was her highest priority. She taught them to work and play together. The family loved to go camping and when sitting around the campfires at night, Billie never failed to have the graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate squares necessary for the beloved S-Mores.

The last years of her life, Billie never lost her love and zest for life. She was always cheerful and happy, with a smile, a little song, or a happy comment to share. She was loved by her caregivers. The family greatly appreciated the kind and gentle care they gave her over the years.

Billie is preceded in death by her parents and sister Claudia Marie Capes. She is survived by her brother Allen and sister-in-law Sylvia Capes; Children Randy Gene (Melanie) Lockwood, Sandra (Kevin) Howlett, Susan (Artie) Edmunds, Scott (Cindy) Lockwood, and Wendy Lockwood; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
