Obituary
Bruno Vassel III, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the age of 83.
Bruno was born on September 15, 1943, in Fargo, North Dakota, to Bruno Vassel II and Mary Erety Elmer. His early years took him to several parts of the United States, including Ohio, Illinois, and New Jersey, before his family moved to Brazil in 1955. There, he attended high school and began a lifelong appreciation for different cultures and people.
While living in Brazil, Bruno joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning a lifetime of faith and service. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a BA degree in Sociology. He served in the Germany Bavarian Mission for a year and a half then was asked to help reopen Italy to the church where he served for another year.
After returning to BYU, Bruno Married Carolyn Kay Edwards and they had 5 children. They lived in Utah, Las Vegas, New Jersey, again in Utah, and ultimately in Idaho.
Throughout his life, Bruno was known for his business prowess, working as an executive in New York City and also starting several companies. When he wasn’t at work, you could find him on the stream with a fly rod in his hand, in the mountains hunting, or on the beach surf casting into the ocean.
Bruno is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kay Vassel and their children: P. Cayr Curtis (Matthew T. Curtis); Elizabeth Kay Smithson (J. Daniel Smithson); Bruno Vassel IV (Heidi Hart Vassel); Jennifer Lynn Orme (Drostan N. Orme); and Christopher Charles-Wendell Vassel (Kris Lindeman Vassel).
He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Erety Hill and Elisabeth Helen Andersen (Darian Andersen), as well as 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tributes
We had the best of times with Bruno and Cari. I learned valuable insights from you both and will remember you forever.
My deepest sympathy to Bruno's family and friends. I have very fond memories of spending time with your family when I was a young girl in New Jersey. Prayers for all who loved him.🙏🙏
What a kind, adventurous, wonderful man. He was our bishop in New Jersey and friend when we moved to Sandy, Utah. He was such a great example to me and my family. Love you, Bruno, and your whole family.
So very sorry for the loss of Bruno, cousin Cari and family. My husband Mike and I spent some time with Bruno and Cari at Martha’s Vineyard several years ago. He and Cari made sure we had a good time while there. Bruno was so kind and had a genuinely gentle spirit about him. He will be missed 🙏💔
Our condolences and love to Cari and family.
We served as missionaries in the Europe Area Office in the office next to Bruno and Cari. We quickly realized what a great couple they were and how much more enjoyable and spiritual our mission would be from time spent with them. They were our mentors and close friends.
We spent an incredible week at Martha's Vineyard together and Bruno was happier than we were when we went deep sea fishing and caught our first fish. We knew how much they dearly loved each other, the Lord and others.
Much love to you Bruno and Cari
Cari and Bruno had such a profound impact on my life with their example of service and love.
Dear Family of Bruno,
We are so sorry to hear that Bruno needed to leave. But we are sure he is strongly needed at the other side of the vail. We remember Bruno always as a great friend and missionary. We have met him first on our mission in Frankfurt. We loved all the devotionals and meetings we had. He has been service in praxis. Always caring, serving and always loving . We were lucky to be invited to Martha’s Vineyard on our honeymoon trip. That week has been never forgotten. He always questioned the missionaries about their service and teachings during the week. He did not only feed them with food but with knowledge.
So sorry for you. We are with you in thoughts and prayers.
Good bye Bruno until we meet again!
