Lou was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1928 to Marjorie Peterson and Moyle Burdette Petersen.

He attended elementary school and high school in Canada and came to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah where hemet his sweetheart, Shirley, at a party given to welcome the new Canadian students. Married for eternity in 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple, theynever stopped holding hands, using Morse code to say, "I love you!"

When the two were newlyweds they made many lifelong friends in Lamba Delta Sigma, their LDS group from the University of Utah.

Lou worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Physical Facilities Department where he examined and repaired ward buildings all over the country and in Canada, and set up the electrical systems for the Church History Pageants. As Lou and Shirley traveled for this job, he would often stop to help people along the way, always showing compassion for others.

They enjoyed their time caring for Shirley's brother Scott. The symphony, the University of Utah Basketball games and gymnastics, and the theater were just a few of the places they loved to spend time together.
