B. Gale Dick

1926 ~ 2014

B. Gale Dick, a former professor of physics at the University of Utah and co-founder of Save Our Canyons, passed away on July 18, 2014.

Gale was born in Portland, Oregon, and attended Reed College, Oxford University (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Cornell University. During his tenure at the University he also served as Department Chair and Dean of the Graduate School. After his retirement, he acted as President of Save Our Canyons until earlier this year. He received the Pfeifferhorn Conservation Leadership Award, the Norma Matheson Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, the League of Women Voters of Salt Lake Community Service Award, and many others. Gale was also an avid outdoorsman and accomplished violinist.

In addition to teaching generations of students and his great contributions to the preservation of Utah's wild and scenic places, Gale will be remembered for his generous spirit, his boundless energy, intellect, and curiosity, his unquenchable laugh, his effortless happiness, and his ability to instill these characteristics in those fortunate enough to spend time with him.

Gale is survived by his wife, Ann; their children, Tim (Jane), Robin (Svenn), and Steve (Karen), seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many beloved friends.

A memorial service will be held in early Fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Save Our Canyons or the charity of choice.
