Catherine Bailey Poulsen

1958 ~ 2023

Catherine Bailey Poulsen, age 65, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family members that love her, on September 26, 2023. An inspiration to her family and others, Catherine lived a life of service, warmth and genuine caring. She was deeply grounded in solid values and commitments to choosing the right. Catherine was born to wonderful parents, Catherine Theresa Lynn Bailey and Glen Alma Bailey, on June 25, 1958 in Logan, Utah. Catherine spent her early years mainly in Logan and Satellite Beach, Florida. Catherine attended Weber State University, graduating with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. She served as a therapist in Newborn ICUs at McKay-Dee Hospital, LDS Hospital, Primary Children’s Medical Center and Utah Valley Medical Center. While in Provo, she met Gregory Peter Poulsen, whom she married on August 19, 1980 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have five wonderful children and four children-in-law who she adored, along with 10 grandchildren that she doted on.

Catherine loved being a mother and grandmother, and made every birthday and holiday and special event memorable. Friends and family were always welcome in her home, and family gatherings were her favorite occasions. She loved to serve others and helped organize neighborhood events, especially those that helped people in need. She could be counted on to visit those that were sick or needed a helping hand. She loved to serve in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and especially enjoyed teaching young people. She and her husband served as missionaries at Temple Square and spiritual volunteers at the VA Medical Center, which she loved.

Catherine was accomplished at many crafts, and was especially skilled at knitting: children and grandchildren have many examples of her talent. She loved long walks, particularly with the family dogs, often travelling five miles in a day. She was very proud of her Irish-born mother’s heritage, and made wonderful Irish meals, especially on holidays, and loved travelling in the Emerald Isle. She also loved spending time at the family cabin near Oakley, Utah, especially with family and friends.

Catherine will be greatly missed by those surviving her, including her husband and children, Amy Catherine Poulsen, Julia Marie Sorenson (Eric), Stephen Gregory Poulsen (Monica), Lisa Ann Clive (David) and Brent Stewart Poulsen (Whitney); and ten grandchildren, William, Madelyn, Sam, Mia, Grace, Caroline, Luna, Clifford, Archie and Peter. She is also survived by siblings Glen Lynn Bailey, Janet Taylor and Joseph Lynn Bailey. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Sharon Spainhower and David Lynn Bailey. Catherine has deep faith that family ties are forever and looks forward to joyous reunions.

The family wishes to express its deep thanks for the superb care and heartfelt caring from our Intermountain Health caregivers in the neurology and hospice services: they softened the bumps in a difficult journey.

Services will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at the Yalecrest Ward, 1035 South 1800 East, where friends and family may visit Friday evening, October 6th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery.

Catherine was a wonderful neighbor and such a dedicated mother. She adored her children and was their greatest cheerleader. I enjoyed teaching some of them and appreciated her as a neighbor. We shared pride in the fact that our two homes (built almost 100 years ago) were the bookends of the south side of Herbert Avenue from 17th to 18th east. Such good times...such good memories.

- Barbara Paxton Pahnke

I so loved Catherine. I send my love to you
and your family.

Catherine's funeral was everything she would have wanted it to be. She was so proud of all of you and must be bursting with joy today knowing how you loved her and one another. It was fun to see all of the grandchildren wearing their knitted items. Holding hands never sounded so good. May your many good memories and tender feelings bring you peace and comfort until you meet again.
