In Loving Memory of Cathy Kiburtz

Cathy Kiburtz, beloved wife of Alan Kiburtz for 54 years, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024 at her home in Salt Lake City surrounded by loved ones, both two and four-legged. She was 76 years old.

Born on August 4, 1947 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, Cathy was known for her drive and passion for the many projects and causes to which she devoted herself over her life. The first in her family to earn a college degree, she graduated from Framingham State University. In her first years of marriage, she moved frequently, as Alan was an Air Force pilot. Her older son, Ethan, was born in Guam, and the younger son, Jeff, was born in New Mexico. She spent most of her adult life in the Los Angeles area. Always willing to help, and undeterred by convention, she coached Jeff’s little league baseball team for many years, and later handled all of the scorekeeping for the California Amateur Skateboarding League. During this same time she went back to school, earning a degree in accounting and an MBA from California Lutheran University. A licensed CPA, she went to work full time in 1987 at 40 years old, and finished her career 16 years later as the Controller of Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She then founded GreySave, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing retired racing greyhounds. During her 17-year tenure as the president of GreySave, the organization rescued nearly 2,000 retired racers, and she often had a small pack at home. She remained committed to the cause until her final days.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Alan, her loving children Ethan (Kristen) and Jeff (Luciana), grandchildren Samantha, Miles, Olivia and Anika, siblings Becky, Pete and Laura, her aunt Mabel, and three greyhounds, JetFire, Wynona and Sam.

We miss her terribly, but she will live on in our memories, continuing to inspire us.

Cathy was an absolutely amazing woman who inspired and awed me with her intelligence, tenacity, and strength. She was as tough as she was kind. Many people want to change the world, but Cathy truly did. She was more than my friend, she was chosen family. I love and miss her deeply and am grateful to have been a part of her remarkable journey.
