  • Our beloved Celia Torres Becerra, returned to her heavenly home on October 5, 2021. Celia was born in May of 1935 in Mexico City to Rufino Torres Valdez and Rebecca Paez Jimenez. Celia was educated in Mexico where she exceled as a buyer of four firms with ties to the United States which led her to learn the English language.

    Celia served a full-time mission in the Northern Mexican Mission from 1956-58 and was blessed to serve as the mission secretary called by Elder Spencer W. Kimball.

    On October 26, 1959, she married Juan Carriles Becerra in a civil ceremony, and they departed the next day to be sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They then began a beautiful life and marriage together that lasted almost 62 years.

    In August 1963, Juan and Celia emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah with a unique opportunity for Juan to work as a tailor for ZCMI department stores. They brought their first-born son Juan and were expecting their second son, Jorge. They planned to live in the U.S. for only five years. Fifty-eight years later and blessed with five children; they have created a legacy as a family with Celia as the exemplary matriarch and heart of the family. Celia and Juan have 29 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren whom they dearly love. They have also been blessed with many dear friends and ward members.

    Celia retired from U.S. West Communications in the Accounting department and received distinction for her exemplary work.
    Celia was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her entire life. She had a deep and abiding testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many callings. In addition, Celia served as temple matron in the Tuxtla-Gutierrez and the Mexico City Temples with her husband Juan serving in both the temple presidencies. They also loved their time as service missionaries in Palmyra. In between missions, Celia served as a teacher’s aide at Midvale Elementary and loved teaching the bilingual children there for four years.

    Celia is survived by her husband Juan C. Becerra, son Juan (Lisa) Becerra, son Jorge (Debbie) Becerra, daughter Esther (Kregg) Chidester, daughter Laura (Adam) Baker, and son Josue (Cherolyn) Becerra and Flor Colin, Rocio Rodriguez and Violeta Delgado (nieces that lived with the Becerra family for many years).

    Funeral services for Celia Torres Becerra will be held at the Eastridge Stake Center, 1187 East Draper Parkway, Draper, Utah on October 15, 2021 beginning at 10:00am. A visitation will be held at the Eastridge Stake Center Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 6:00-9:00pm and prior to the funeral from 9:00–9:55am. Friends and Family are welcome to join us in celebrating Celia’s life. The family is asking that masks be worn as social distancing will not be possible.

    Nuestra amada Celia Torres Becerra, regreso a su hogar celestial Octubre 5, 2021. Celia nació en Mayo de 1935 en la ciudad de México a Rufino Torres Valdez and Rebecca Páez Jimenez. Celia fue educada en México y se destacó como compradora de cuatro empresas con vínculos con los Estados Unidos. Esta oportunidad le ayudo aprender el Inglés.

    Celia sirvió una misión de tiempo completo en la Misión Mexicana del Norte de 1956-58 y fue bendecida a servir como la secretaria de la misión llamada por el Elder Spencer W. Kimball.

    En octubre 26, 1959, Celia se casó con Juan Carriles Becerra en una ceremonia civil y salieron el próximo día para ser sellados por tiempo y eternidad en el templo de Mesa, Arizona de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de Los Santos de Los Últimos Días. Empezaron una vida hermosa juntos y un matrimonio que duro casi 62 años.

    En agosto 1963, Juan y Celia emigraron a Salt Lake City, Utah, en los Estados Unidos, con una oportunidad única para Juan de trabajar como sastre para la empresa de ZCMI. Trajeron a su primogénito Juan y estaban esperando a su segundo hijo, Jorge. Ellos pensaban permanecer en los Estados Unidos por solo cinco años. Cincuenta y ocho años después y bendecido con cinco hijos; han creado un legado como familia con Celia como matriarca ejemplar y el corazón de la familia. Celia y Juan tienen 29 nietos y 15 bisnietos quienes aman con todo su corazón. También han sido bendecidos con muchos amigos queridos y miembros de los barrios donde asistieron a La Iglesia.

    Celia se jubiló de U.S. West Communications en el departamento de Contabilidad y recibió distinciones por su trabajo ejemplar.

    Celia fue un miembro fiel de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de Los Santos de Los Últimos Días a través de su vida entera. Ella tiene un testimonio profundo y perdurable del evangelio restaurado de Jesucristo y sirvió fielmente en varios llamamientos. Además, Celia sirvió como matrona en el templo de Tuxtla-Gutierrez y en el templo de la ciudad de México con su esposo Juan quien sirvió en ambas presidencias del templo. También gozaron de su servicio como misioneros en Palmyra, Nueva York. Entre misiones, Celia sirvió como ayudante de maestra por cuatro años en la escuela primaria de Midvale y le encanto enseñar a los niños bilingües.

    A Celia le sobrevive su esposo Juan C. Becerra, hijo Juan (Lisa) Becerra, hijo Jorge (Debbie) Becerra, hija Esther (Kregg) Chidester, hija Laura (Adam) Baker, y hijo Josué (Cherolyn) Becerra y sobrinas Flor Colin, Rocio Rodriguez y Violeta Delgado (sobrinas que vivieron con la familia Becerra por varios años).

    Servicios funerarios para Celia Torres Becerra se llevarán a cabo en el centro de estaca Eastridge, 1187 East Draper Parkway, Draper, Utah Octubre 15, 2021 empezando a las 10:00am. Se realizará una visitación en el centro de estaca Eastridge el Jueves, Octubre 14, 2021 de 6:00-9:00pm y antes del servicio funerario de 9:00–9:55am. Los amigos y familiares son bienvenidos a unirse con nosotros en la celebración de la vida de Celia. La familia les pide se usen mascarilla ya que el distanciamiento social no será posible.

    Dear Becerra Family, we send our heartfelt condolences at this time. We have such good memories living down the street from your family in Sandy & being in the same ward for so many years. I will never forget the delicious pastries that Sister Becerra made & shared with the neighborhood. I also loved hearing her share her testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints & her love for her Savior. She is s lovely lady who will be missed. Love to you all.
