Bountiful, UT — Christian Eugene Shingleton, 93, returned to his heavenly home in the early morning hours of December 28, 2023. He was born on December 13, 1930, along with his twin sister Jeanne, to Samuel and Marie (Dalbout) Shingleton. They were numbers 7 and 8 out of 9 children. Four of which passed away before he was born, 3 due to a meningitis outbreak and 1 shortly after birth.

Chris grew up in Salt Lake City during the Great Depression. His story of hardship and sadness greatly influenced his work ethic and his incredible ability to see value in something others might not. He had a "don’t worry, I’ve got it covered" attitude.

Chris graduated from West High School and spent the next two years working for Morton Salt Company. He swore he was the young man pictured on the salt mound in the Encyclopedia. He served his country in the United States Army and was a proud veteran of the Korean War.

Before being sent overseas, Chris married Nancy Anderson on March 14, 1951. Together they raised 4 children, 1 daughter and 3 sons. After 23 years together, they divorced, but remained good friends. Chris later married Vyrna Campbell. He loved and cared for her children as his own. They also divorced but remained good friends until her passing.

Upon returning home from his military service, he became employed by Utah Power and Light where he worked for 35 years. First, as a surveyor and later he moved to Mining and Exploration. This granted him the freedom to work outdoors, which he had a great appreciation for.

Chris was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had the honor to serve as a Scoutmaster for 9 years. He supervised knotted rope bridges, river-runs, and wilderness safety. Although, one of his favorite scouting memories was giving unauthorized flying lessons.

After retirement, due to boredom, Chris enrolled himself in several classes at Salt Lake Community College. His favorite being welding, which he developed a passion for. With the help of his mentor and good friend Blair, he was able to complete many amazing projects. Ranging from car hauler trailers, water wheels to generate power, metal repairs on his two 1945 Willys Jeeps, and even a metal Christmas tree.

Our dad leaves behind a legacy of service and generosity. Always putting others before himself. He was a pilot, a gifted poet, and a true patriot. His talents were many and appreciated by all.

He leaves behind his partner and dear friend Velma, one daughter, and two sons: Christie (Randy) Webb, Casey Shingleton, Roger (Michelle) Shingleton, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with 1 on the way. Preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Shingleton, 2 brothers and 6 sisters. Dad, enjoy your morning walks in Heaven and wave hello to loved ones as you go by.

Our family wishes to give thanks to Lisa from Hospice, Brylie from Loving Hands, as well as his many neighbors and friends who spent time with him.

A small funeral service for close friends and family will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 12 noon located at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd, Bluffdale, Utah 84065.

Guestbook/Condolences

We've lived in Jeff and Linetta Moyes's (now Tanya Platt's) basement for almost 8 years now and we've had several simple yet enjoyable interactions with our neighbor "Chris", especially as we've taken our kids on walks. Our kids' favorite was when he brought out ice cream treats during the summer. We're grateful to have known him as much as we have and look forward to seeing him and knowing him better someday. He has such a kind and genuine nature. Prayers for all who are going through this loss.

Chris was lovingly known to our family as Gramps. He was a special person in our lives and will be missed greatly. He was supportive of me and my kids through all of our ups and downs with his kindness and generosity and was always concerned that everyone had what they needed. I consider myself lucky that he was part of my life and will forever be grateful. Love you Gramps.

- Michelle Campbell

Chris has been such a great friend and influence in the lives of Rob, Michelle, Lindsay, Kailey, and Caden. He continued to be a constant companion with Lindsay, Kailey, Ian, Cody and their children over these last twenty years. He never missed a birthday and lunch invite. He was interested in their sports activities. We were fortunate to have known him - he will be missed. Sending sympathy to his family during this hard time.
