Christine Sara Latimer, age 36, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends, late Friday, December 20, at the Huntsman Cancer Institute after a three-and-a-half-year battle with leukemia. She never gave up. She never stopped fighting.

Christine is survived by her husband, Matt, her daughters, Gabriella, Sophia, and Isabella, her sister, Erika Morgan, her mother, Sara Garcia, her grandparents Eduardo and Gloria Medina and Cristina Garcia. She was preceded in death by her father, Hernan Garcia, and grandfather, Próspero Garcia.

Born on 8-8-88, in Concord, California, Christine was special from the beginning. As a child, she loved God with all her heart. She shared her father’s love of soccer and her parent’s love of dance, music, and their Peruvian culture. She loved and helped care for her little sister, Erika, who looked up to Christine as her hero.

Christine graduated from Hillcrest High School in 2006, where she became a cheerleader and shared her gifts of dancing and making people smile. She excelled in her studies, earning good grades, passing AP tests, and receiving a full-ride scholarship to Utah State, which she turned down in favor of a scholarship to the prestigious Westminster University.

In college, Christine studied neuroscience, helped her fellow students as a Resident Advisor, and met her husband, Matt Latimer, who studied at the nearby University of Utah. She graduated in 2010 with honors and became a passionate scientist at Nelson Laboratories where she worked for five years.

Christine and Matt were soulmates from the moment they met. They dated, went Latin dancing every weekend, and never wanted to be apart. On December 12, 2009, they sealed their love for each other in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity.

Early in their marriage, Christine and Matt volunteered at Primary Children’s Hospital, where eventually Christine was called to be the Primary President. She loved the children and taught them to “Enjoy the Journey” even in the hard parts, just like she did. Throughout her life, she was called to many roles in the church, where she thrived serving.

Together, Christine and Matt built a beautiful life and family and were blessed with three wonderful and amazing girls, Gabby, Sophie, and Izzy. Christine loved being with them and cheering for them in their activities. Everything she did, every choice she made, was for her girls and her all-consuming love for them.

Christine loved life and lived it to the fullest. Something she only got better at on April 8, 2021, when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Even through the trials of two bone marrow transplants, many rounds of chemo, experimental treatments, and countless blood transfusions, she always put others first, serving and smiling. She was happy if others were happy.

Christine made everything beautiful. She found joy in the journey by finding something to be grateful for, even in the darkest times. She had faith and an unwavering testimony of her Savior’s love for her and her family, and that God would always be there and provide a way. She spread God’s love to everyone she met by using her voice and story to teach about Christ. Her light in this world will continue to shine.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the nurses and doctors in both the LDS and Hunstman Hospital BMT. As they fought this battle with Christine, they have become family and we are indebted to their service.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Jordan Heights Chapel, 4021 Shinnerock Dr, South Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be held at the church on December 27, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm and on Saturday, prior to the funeral, from 9:30-10:30 am. The service will be livestreamed via Zoom and can be accessed by clicking the "Watch Services" button above.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Utah.

To such a dear family. My heart is with you. As Sophia’s 4th grade teacher, I want her to know that I know she is a wonderful student with a great heart. My thoughts are with you Sophia. I know your dear mother will be watching over you and your sisters always.

- Mrs. Robin Ashton

I never knew Christine as a mother to her three beautiful daughters or as a wife to her devoted husband, Matt. Rather, I was her college professor and advisor at Westminster. Christine was very special to me. She was incredibly bright and understood very complex material at a high level. More importantly, Christine was a bright light in the classroom. She was a kind and thoughtful person who carried with her a sense of joy. I never tired of seeing the giant picture of her beautiful face hanging on the Westminster dormitory building on 1300 East.

I followed Christine’s devastating battle with leukemia from afar, through Facebook. I only communicated with her a few times but I read all of her posts and looked at all of her pictures. It was clear how much she loved her family and how hard she fought to stay with them. While the news of her passing was heartbreaking, I am grateful that she is no longer suffering. I send my love to all of you. You are so lucky to have had Christine love you.

Dear Matt, Gabby, Sophie and Izzy:

In January of 2009 I was called as the bishop of the Westminster Ward, and soon met Christine Garcia. From the start, I noted that Christine was a truly luminous and beautiful spirit—a supreme torch bearer, shedding such light and joy on all around her. It was as if Christine was surrounded by a circle of happiness and positive spiritual energy which was almost tangible. It was always a true joy and delight to be in her presence. Throughout 2009 I watched with great interest as her courtship with Matt Latimer, another member of the Westminster Ward, unfolded, culminating in their temple sealing in December of 2009. There were may marriages in our little ward that year, but I felt something special about the union of Matt and Christine, and foresaw that they would be truly remarkable parents, a perfect combination of strength, joyousness, love, and dedication. Christine is one in a million—a special, radiant soul. I have no doubt that her angelic influence will continue to hover over and bless the lives of her sweet daughters, and her children’s children to the latest generation.

My wife Julie joins with me in extending to you our love, condolences, and great hope in the promises of the Lord!

With much love,
