  • Cilea Monteiro de Brito, 83, passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on August 10, 1938, in Niteroi, RJ – Brazil to João Joffre Monteiro and Octacilia de Araujo Gama.

Cilea was the third child of the fifteen children in her family. During her childhood she lived at her grandma’s farm in Maricá – Rio de Janeiro, then she moved to Mimoso do Sul - Espírito Santo, followed by a move to Campos de Goitacazes - Rio de Janeiro. Her final move was to São Gonçalo - Rio de Janeiro, where she met her husband Nelito.

As a child she loved to study, ride bikes and horses, play and bathe in the waters of Rio Paraíba. She delighted in her bareback horse riding skills.

Through her father’s side, her family followed the principles of the Baptist Church, and through her mother’s side, the Catholic Church. She married Emmanuel Marcellos de Brito at the age of 20 and had two children, Patricia and Pedro Paulo. She studied courses in sewing and haircutting. She was a professional hairdresser for many years.

In November of 1968, at the age of 30, she learned about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and gained her first testimony while attending the missionary discussions. With the exception of her seven year old son, she was baptized along with her family on December 1st, 1968, in the Niterói branch. Hers was the first family in the city of São Gonçalo to be baptized into the Church. They were privileged to accompany the missionaries in several discussions with many different investigators. Through these experiences, Cilea learned the value and love for missionary work without ever being formally set apart as a missionary. She preached the gospel to many people. Her testimony was a true treasure.

She served as a Primary President for more than 20 years. The many children that she taught continue to demonstrate their great love and gratitude for her. She was sealed to her spouse and children in October of 1978 in the Provo Temple.

Cilea was a wonderful person who loved all without distinction. Her valiant testimony of the Gospel was contagious. She had an immense love for her family and served them tirelessly. She was known and loved for her faith, prayers, and fasting on behalf of anyone who needed help from the Father. She was faithful in her daily scripture and patriarchal blessing studies. She had an infinite love for our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. Her faithfulness was eternal.

Survived by her two children (daughter - Patricia; son - Pedro Paulo); five grandchildren (Alvaro, Cynthia, Juliana, Vanessa, Victor), and fourteen grandchildren (Julia, Laura, Nathan, Nicole, Kevin, David, Eric, Christopher, Andrew, Viviane, Sabrina, Clarissa, James, and Katharine). Preceded in death by her husband, Emmanuel Marcellos de Brito.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Parkway 2nd Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 351 North Lofty Lane in North Salt Lake.
