At the age of four the Mullen family moved to El Paso Texas. Her father passed away shortly thereafter leaving behind a wife and four children in very challenging circumstances. Her mother, Ellen, later remarried Willard Whipple and she became part of a new family.

She was a very good student and graduated from high school at the age of 17. She was a competitive tennis player and played tennis in high school and in college before it became a sport for women. Coy went to Brigham Young University where she majored in Education. She always remained an avid BYU sports fan.

After graduating from college, she taught thousands of young girls and boys, spending 30 years teaching elementary school with the majority of those years at Backman Elementary in the second grade.

The love of her life was Max A. Newren. They were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 7, 1949. They were married for 55 years. They have three children, Fred, Andy and Nancy.

Coy and Max were very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Coy served in Primary, Young Women’s and Relief Society through her married years. They both served as temple workers in the Salt Lake Temple for many years. After retiring from their working careers, Max and Coy served a mission in Papua New Guinea.

Coy volunteered at LDS Hospital as a volunteer for approx. 10 years following the loss of her husband. She loved learning about the gospel of Jesus Christ and took many classes from Institute and really enjoyed the continued knowledge she gained. She continued to play tennis until she could no longer play.

The Newren family lived in El Paso, Texas; Portland, Oregon; Bryon, Wyoming; Murray, Utah; North Salt Lake, Utah; before settling in their house in Salt Lake City, Utah. Coy lived in her Rose Park home for 63 Years.
