Our father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend, George, one of the last of "The Greatest Generation" passed away peacefully at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City on September 3, 2017. George was born July 10, 1920 as the first of four children to Olive Cardwell and Thomas Georgopoulos. In 1938 he married the love of his life, Elaine Deans, together they had three sons ThomasGeorge (Skip), VonRay and David. At the time of his death he was 97 years old.
George served during World War II in the Philippines in the Army's 41st Division. During his time in the Philippines he was on the Island of Leyte and received a Bronze Star. During the occupation of Japan George served as an E Scout to General Eisenhower and received a Good Conduct Medal, an Occupation Ribbon and many other ribbons and awards.
George worked as a Welder and later became a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 19 until 1985 when he started working for Kennecott. He was a General Foreman of Maintenance until he retired.
After his retirement, George and Elaine became Camp Hosts at Moon Lake where they served for 18 years. making many lifelong friendships. George received the Honorary title of "The Mayor of Moon Lake" from his friends.
George also served for 26 years as a Crossing Guard for Salt Lake City.
He loved being with the children and would bring them candy for the holidays and their birthdays, he knew every child by name that crossed at his walk.
Again, he made many friends and loved spending time with the Police Officers that patrolled his crosswalk.
George continued to live in the same home that he and Elaine purchased 65 years ago with his dog Chloe and loved spending time with his family and friends.
The family expresses their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Salt Lake Veterans Hospital and the U of U Hospital for their love, respect and compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 9 at 12:00 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City.
