Dale Frewin Lund

1934 ~ 2023

Our beloved Dale Frewin Lund passed away on December 13, 2023. Born in Salt Lake City on April 14, 1934, to George and Isabel Frewin Lund.
By any measure, Dale accomplished a great deal in life, but he would say his greatest accomplishment was finding and marrying the girl of his dreams and forever sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Nordhoff. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on May 23, 1957, for time and all eternity.

Dale was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had an unwavering testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and, perhaps not so coincidentally, was on an errand for his church youth group when he met his then-future wife. For more than 70 years, they loved being one another’s best friend. Dale and Betty’s six children, consider themselves to be among the most-blessed in this world being born into such a loving home, Gordon (Mary Jo) Lund, Annette (Scott) Palmer, Douglas (Kathy) Lund, Kimberlee (Chris) Summerhays, Natalee (Steve) Nelson, and Heidee Lund. Dale is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dale had an easy smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was an amazing example of kindness, generosity, integrity, and hard work, spending much of his life working more than one job to provide for his much-loved family. Indeed, he was the hardest working man one could ever know. Dale loved serving others – family, friends, and strangers alike. The love of country and service landed him in the Utah National Guard early in his career journey, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

As a young boy, any time he heard a siren, he would run to the curb at his childhood home on 900 East and wave to the uniformed firemen roaring down the road in the red fire engine. Years later, he would wear that same Salt Lake City Firefighter uniform, running into burning buildings, saving lives, and helping those in need. He was a friend and mentor to those he encountered in the Department and cherished the strong bonds of brotherhood formed during his 27 years of service.

As with most firefighters, Dale had a second career. Visitors to Hogle Zoo will see his indelible print all around on buildings, exhibits, and pathways. After 40 years of ensuring the animals, staff, and guests, had their physical needs met, he retired from the Zoo as the Director of Facilities and Construction in 2002. His contributions around the Zoo and impressions made upon the hearts and minds of his co-workers, stand as monuments to his ability and character. He was a true champion in life.

Dale’s hobby was “doing.” He always had a hustle in his step and was eager to accomplish what needed to be done. He spent a great deal of his “free time” building a cabin in Midway, Utah, with his family over many years. The cabin was perfect for Dale because there was always something there that needed to be done. Dale made countless wonderful memories with much-loved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren overlooking the Heber Valley.

Dale also started an excavation business and included his sons in operating the equipment and working alongside him. With a deft hand, he could do things with his Case 580 backhoe that would leave onlookers stunned. He was an amazing mentor and master teacher.
Dale was the youngest of five children and is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings – Eugene Lund, Lowell Lund, Annabel Stone, and Marius Lund.

Friends and families may gather at a viewing from 11:00 AM – 11:45 AM on Friday, December 22, 2023, after which funeral services will begin at 12:00 PM at the Wasatch 2nd Ward, 1400 South 1900 East. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South in Salt Lake City. Please honor Dale today by thinking of him as you share a kind smile, help someone in need, and take action that will make a difference.

The service will be livestreamed via Zoom and may be joined by clicking the "Watch Services" button above, or by clicking the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86868202252.

“Big Daddy Dale” was a great example to so many. If you were a friend of one of Dale’s children, you were a friend of Dales. When I think of my many experiences with Dale, it brings a smile to my face. Daleraised terrific kids who were great friends to all and his love for Betty was striking. He will be missed.
