  • January 14, 2022. It was the bottom of the 9th and the bases were loaded. Dan stepped up to bat. With a sparkle in his eye and a smile on his face he digs in, the pitch is fast and a bit of a curve ball, he swings…CRACK! It’s up, up, up and away! The crowd goes nuts as all runners round the bases safely making it past home plate. Dan rounds third and sprints to home base, sliding triumphantly in what will be the last play of his incredible career. “SAFE,” yells the umpire.

Dan and his twin brother Don were born in Dallas, Texas on October 17, 1945 to Allan Woods and Helen Anderson Flandro. He enjoyed an idyllic childhood in the Parley’s neighborhood where he spent his free time playing baseball, fixing up cars, building the family cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon and being an All-American boy. Dan graduated from Highland High in 1964. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Minnesota. Always a wiz with numbers, Dan graduated from the University of Utah in Finance and began a long career in the banking industry. Dan married Carolyn Kent Flandro in 1972 in the Salt Lake Temple.

A loyal and steadfast “buddy”, Dan could always be counted on to help others and never desired attention for his efforts. He often spent his Saturdays helping a family member or friend with a home repair project, assisting with an oil change or searching for a random car part at Pic n Pull. Dan had a deep love for automobiles and over the years boasted an impressive collection of unique cars. Always on the hunt, you could often find Dan cruising by car lots looking for that one special “runner.” Dan passed this love onto his own sons and grandsons, as they are all car enthusiasts.

Dan was a dedicated and active member of the LDS Church where he served in many callings in the Parley’s 5th ward. Dan’s greatest joy was found in his family. He was a devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather. Together Dan and Carolyn raised four children. He was an exceptional father and loved his children with a special, unconditional love. He saw to it that their wants and needs were met, but always made sure they knew the importance of hard work and the value of a dollar. In his later years, Dan spent his time being a loving Grandpa to his many grandchildren. He rarely missed a sporting event or dance recital and found great joy in participating in all of their lives.

Dan is survived by his wife Carolyn, sisters Geri (Reese Howell), Lynn (Mike Bailey) and Dianne (Reid Jones) children Cary (Dan Berg), Allan (Susie), Cristy (Jarom Airhart) and Robby (Shelbie) and 25 grandchildren. Dan joins departed loved ones including his parents and twin brother and best friend Don.

    Guestbook/Condolences

    Carolynn,
I have missed Dan's yard presence since his illness increasingly prevented him from being outdoors. I have fond memories of our conversations over the common fence as he educated me about the neighborhood and its history, battled with his sprinkler system and the repairs to our adjoining fence, unexpectedly kept an eye on my yard when I was out of town, or just passed the time of day. From his obituary, I learned about many more things that endeared him to his family and friends. I would also like to add being a first-rate, engaged neighbor. He has left behind positive memories!
Hope to continue the conversations with you and Daisy. Arlene
