  • Daniel Lawrence Schmeidler, age 67, of Sandy, passed away on the evening of Saturday August 21st 2021 in the Respiratory ICU after a long and hard fight with respiratory complications.

Dan was born in Durango CO. on August 14, 1954 to Albert & Marjorie Schmeidler. He was the middle child and had an older brother David and younger sister Patricia.

Dan spent his childhood in Aztec New Mexico and loved the outdoors. He had the habit of bringing home many pets from his adventures which included owls, lizards, spiders, and even a baby golden eaglet. He always claimed that he didn’t know it was a felony at the time. Him and his brother would often wake up early in the morning to go down to the river to fish and enjoy the outdoors. He grew up playing baseball, football, and also went to state in wrestling in high school. He later got into Karate and achieved an Orange belt.

Dan graduated high school and decided to pursue a career in Barbering and Cosmetology. He attended The Utah Barber College and during that time he met his future wife Leona, who had been attending the same college. They dated for two years and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti Utah Temple. After working for four years in other salons, Dan and Leona opened their own salon, Crown Design in Taylorsville Ut. They struggled to have children of their own and after nearly 10 years of trying, they were able to adopt their daughter Ali in April of 1987. Becoming a father was one of the biggest joys in his life. Dan was a devoted father and husband and always put his family first. He lived in Sandy Utah for the majority of his life and was a dear friend to those close to him.

In 1995 Dan’s parents came from New Mexico to live with him and his family in their basement apartment. Four years later Dan’s father was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away shortly after. Dan was a kind and loyal son and took care of his mother for the next 17 years through her many struggles with mental illness.

Dan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully for many years. During his life he held many important callings in the church. He was a worthy Priesthood holder and was a wonderful example to his family. He was also very supportive of Leona in helping her fulfill her callings as well.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Albert & Marjorie Schmeidler; his sister Patricia Smith, and his two nephews, Craig & Derrick Schmeidler and many other loved ones.

Dan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Leona Schmeidler; his daughter and son-in-law Ali Micek (Nick); and his two grandchildren, Kendall and Grant Micek; his brother and sister-in-law David Schmeidler (Darlene); his three nephews, Wayne Schmeidler, Brady Ashworth, Tucker Smith; and his three nieces, Crystal Parkin, Bridget Crane, and Patrice Bales. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Friday August 27, 2021 at Larkin Sunset Gardens. (1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd., Sandy, UT. 84092). Susan and I have many fond memories of Dan and Leona when they resided in the Midvalley Sixth Ward. PS - sorry we missed the service. We were out of town and wished we could have been there.

I am so sorry to hear this. I am Danny’’s cousin and I haven’t seen him or his siblings since mom and I visited her brother and family in New Mexico in about 1961. So sorry we all lost touch, but I wanted to send my sincere sympathy to his family.

    - Diana Schaeffer

My dear Leona, It was clearly a fluke that I came across Danny’s obituary. Craig and I were so stunned: that such a strong, healthy, strong-willed, strong-minded, quick witted man with such a magnetic smile could no longer be in our midst. We’re so sorry for your loss, as well as for Ali, your grandchildren, and your families. For so many years we enjoyed being a part of your lives. If there could be anything we can do, please let us know. May God’s ever-lasting peace and grace be with you all. Diane and Craig Jorgensen
