Darrell Mills Barnes

Darrell Mills Barnes was born 29 March 1926, Salt Lake City to Royal Kenneth Barnes and Fanny Mills Barnes. He died on 14 April 2022 at the age of 96.

Darrell was part of the Greatest Generation growing up during the Depression, World War II and the Big Band Era. He had fond memories of his youth on Princeton Avenue in Salt Lake with his older brother Kenneth, little sister Joan and many friends. He enjoyed playing football at East High, upon graduating he volunteered for military service during World War II and earned the rank of Sargent as a gunner on a B-24 Bomber. He attended the University of Utah and was a lifelong Ute. Darrell married Kathaleen Rowley on 9 January, 1959. He worked in the banking, trucking and timber industries. Darrell’s passions included skiing, tennis, and hiking/climbing Utah mountains. Darrell was an expert skier and certified ski instructor. He regularly skied and played tennis until his late 80’s. He loved the Utah mountains especially Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. He was proud of his family’s pioneer and banking heritage and he enjoyed genealogy. Survived by his wife Kathy Barnes of 63 years, sister Joan Raynor (Jack) sons Clay and Clint (Julia) and four grandchildren Rebecca Fisher, Madison (Spencer) Young, Michaeli, Barnes and Hayden Barnes. With deepest gratitude the family would like to thank Canyon Hospice and care provider Maria and Nurse Rachel. In memory of Darrell take the stairs instead of an elevator or go on a hike.

Visitation Thursday, 21 April 2022, Larkin Mortuary 260 East South Temple 10:00-11:00 am followed by a graveside service at 11:30 am at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
