David Paul Greer of West Jordan, Utah, our beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa, and friend, passed away on August 10, 2023, following a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. At the time of his cancer diagnosis in October of 2022, David was in excellent health and he and his family were hopeful he would defy the odds and overcome this devastating disease. But despite early intervention and months of grueling treatments, the cancer progressed unabated. In the face of intense physical pain, David spent his final weeks enjoying the company of loved ones and reflecting with gratitude on the blessings received and the love shared over the course of a life well lived.

David was born on May 29, 1954, in Phoenix, Arizona, the third of four children and only son of Paul Hayden Greer and Mary Carolyn Callahan. He is survived by Jeanie, his beloved wife of nearly 48 years, sisters Linda Greer, Susan Gudykunst (Ron), and Lisa Erlick (Steve), sons Ryan (Sharon), Kevin (Melissa), and Aaron (Marissa), grandchildren Belle Crawford (Caious), Mila, Leo, Noah, Talia, Milo, and Jillian, and great-grandsons Jude and Reese.

Anyone who knew David knew of his encyclopedic knowledge and his dry wit, but most of all they knew of his love of music and the generosity with which he shared his talents. David’s musical journey began as a young boy when his mother enrolled him in piano lessons and he quickly demonstrated a natural aptitude for the instrument. His exceptional talents eventually led to a music scholarship to the University of Arizona, where he played tuba in the marching band and University Symphony Orchestra and studied Organ Performance as a student of Dr. Roy Johnson. For the rest of his life, David’s organ playing was a fixture in local church services, choir concerts, and private recitals and it was truly a privilege to hear him play.

David married Jeanie Marchbanks in October of 1975 and their marriage was solemnized in the Manti Utah Temple in September of 1977. Following their marriage, the couple moved to the Salt Lake City area where David later had the opportunity to utilize his musical talents to build a career as a pipe organ technician with his long-time friend and mentor Bill Hesterman of the Rocky Mountain Organ Company. During his decades in the business, David tuned, maintained, repaired, and restored hundreds of organs across the western United States and developed a reputation as a master of the craft. One of the crowning achievements of his career was being entrusted to serve as project manager for the preservation and restoration of the iconic Salt Lake Tabernacle pipe organ while the building underwent a seismic upgrade and renovation from 2005 to 2007. David was immensely proud of the success of the project and felt a deep sense of fulfillment any time he had an opportunity to hear that organ.

David was not ready to be done with his life. Just 3 months before his diagnosis, he and Jeanie spent a month hiking across Germany and he was making plans for other similar adventures in the future. He had just bought a new pellet grill and was perfecting his processes for smoking various meats and loved having people over to sample the results. But what David was looking forward to most was getting to see his grandkids grow up. Of all the roles he played during his life, the one he took to most naturally was being grandpa. Nothing brought out his tender and playful nature like spending time with his grandkids. He adored those kids and they adored him back. He imparted to each of them a love of learning and a sense of curiosity and wonder that was unique and special and he will be greatly missed.

Services will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:00am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 1465 West Bristol Ridge Rd, West Jordan. There will be a visitation on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm and again on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30am prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to a cancer research charity of your choice.

Jeanie and family,

We are sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Know of our love for you all at this difficult time. His organ music is one that I still talk about years later. Patriotic and Christmas songs are not the same without “Dave’s Touch!”
Love to you all!

To David’s Family,
Although none of you likely know who I am, I would feel remiss if I missed the opportunity to express my sympathy to you and my respect for David. He was a good man who I recall as one always willing to stand firm in what he believed was right. I was inspired by his sharp mind and his ability to process information and recall fact. He had a positive influence in my life. I am glad to have worked with and know him.
God Bless
Kent Whitehead
