  • Debbie Kaye Childrey, age 64, Cottonwood Heights, Utah, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her family after a long and valiant fight from neuroendocrine cancer on Friday, March 5, 2021.

Debbie loved people. She was an avid organizer and planner of family parties. She would send out food assignments for Thanksgiving before Halloween. She loved playing cards and played with her pinochle (‘pee-knuckle’) group once a month. She loved yardwork and mowing the lawn. Her yard always looked immaculate. This love only came after watching her husband do it for so many years. Previous to his passing, she had no interest in yardwork. When he passed away, she started doing it as a gift to him and fell in love with the work. Debbie was artistic. She loved to sketch and paint. She was a talented writer. She had started a book that she intended to publish as one of her accomplishments in this life, but she was unable to finish it. The baton was passed to her siblings. Debbie owned her own business for 6 years. She closed Diaper Outlet when her husband who was diagnosed with terminal cancer required full-time care. Debbie loved to travel. She had a passion for the French language, country, and people. She had planned a cruise to Paris in 2020, but Covid-19 cancelled the trip. She loved the beauty of nature, camping, and Christmas music. She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She always went out of her way to make people feel special and loved. She was selfless and often anonymously gave to the less fortunate. She had a positive energy that was contagious. Debbie was a remarkable woman who enjoyed life and all it had to offer.

Debra Kaye Mattingly was born on March 27, 1956 in Salt Lake City to Herbert Ralph Mattingly and Afton Lucille Phister Mattingly (deceased). Ralph later married Donna Genzer Mattingly. Debbie married James E. Ostler on August 31, 1973, later divorced. Married John Edward Childrey, Jr. on October 6, 1984 (deceased).

Debbie is survived by her four children; Kaisen James Ostler, Mike John Childrey, Mark Antony Childrey (Melissa), Kishoni Kae Childrey. Five grandchildren whom she cherished; Skye Marie Childrey, Caden Edward Childrey, Ashlyn Marissa Childrey, Nevaeh Kae Childrey, and Jaleah Jordan Childrey. Sisters; Coleen Bay (David), Melody Rae Mattingly, Lori Gaye Mattingly, and brothers Shawn McKay Mattingly (Kelly) and Shane McCrae Mattingly (Debbie). Her youngest brother, Evan Jade Mattingly (Julie Anderson) preceded her in death. She had many nieces and nephews and loved each one of them.

Due to COVID-19, funeral services will be held for members of the immediate and extended family only. Friday, March 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E Dimple Dell Road (10600 S), Sandy, Utah. Please wear a mask.

Family viewing and closing of the casket will be held prior to the services from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Interment will follow the services.

Special thanks to Intermountain Medical Center and Hospice and for the many friends and family who helped care for Debbie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John and Debra Childrey Family Trust to help defer funeral costs at this link: https://gofund.me/51dcc124 .

I had the honor of getting to know your mom as a neighbor & friend in her previous West Jordan neighborhood. She was always such a bright, sweet light for me, even as she went through some of her challenges. I admired her energy & style. We missed her after your family moved, but were glad that you all could live closer to other family members. So sorry for your tender loss!♥️

We knew Debbie as a teenager. She was my go to babysitter. My children adored her! I knew when I left them in her care that they would be well taken care of. Debbie became an important part of our family. Debbie came into our life when I needed a lifesaver, she was it! We will always love Debbie for the sweetheart that she is.
