Rich and family, I am heartbroken over the loss of Debbie. She fought so very hard. One of my last text messages with her was for me to pray for her family. That is just like Debbie.....always thinking of others. I am so grateful for knowing such a beautiful person. As I promised Debbie, I am praying for you all as well as for Debbie as I am sure she misses you. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18) May His nearness bring you comfort and peace. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I love your beautiful family.

Obituary
Debra Ann Butterfield passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Debra was born in Ogden, Utah, to Maurine Rose and Roland Pearse Wheelwright on October 27, 1955. She was the eldest of six children.
Due to unfortunate circumstances, when Debra was 16, being the oldest child, she had to take on the role of primary caregiver for her five younger siblings, especially her four younger brothers. She became head cook and housekeeper, helped with homework, and being the only family member with a driver’s license, she chauffeured the family to where they needed to be. She also began taking Work-Study classes in school and working at Hill Air Force Base during her summers to help provide for the financial needs of the family.
After High School she was still able to attend Weber State off and on, as she worked towards a Degree in Elementary Education. Though she never completed her degree, she gained training that became of great worth to her later on, as a mother, and as a teacher in many capacities.
Eventually, Debra was able to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and labored in the Belgium, Brussels Mission. She loved the people of Belgium and France and the things she felt and experienced there.
Soon after her mission, she met Rich, married in the Salt Lake Temple, and became a wife and a mother. She served the Savior in a variety of capacities, including Primary President and Cub Scout Committee Chair. But her favorite callings usually involved teaching and playing the piano or the organ.
Her lifelong dream was to be a full-time mom, which she was able to attain. She enjoyed being with her children, teaching them, and taking them on frequent field trips around northern Utah. She was also able to incorporate her passions by teaching piano lessons and music theory out of her home for many years. Her students ranged from 5 to 93 years of age, and she taught hundreds of people over the last few decades. Her students loved her, and many young missionaries entered the field with the ability to play Hymns on the piano, because of her. She loved each of her students and continued to teach lessons until just a few weeks prior to her passing.
Debra was kind to all she met. All her life she showed her love by serving those around her. She loved the gospel and cherished the scriptures. She lived as a wonderful example to her family and friends as a follower of Jesus Christ. She faced her trials with unwavering faith in His Atonement and plan for her and her family. As she sought peace during her last days on earth, that peace extended to the hearts of her family, friends, and neighbors.
We are forever blessed and honored to have known and loved her.
Debra is survived by her husband, Richard Butterfield; children, Josiah (Kaitlyn), Zachary, Bethanie (Jacob), and Rachel (Matthew); and seven grandchildren, Weston, Caleb, Nettie, Ariel, Leo, James, and Renny, with one on the way. Preceded in death by her parents and her son, Benjamin.
The Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 5562 W. 13680 S., Herriman, Utah, on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Viewing: 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m.
Internment at the Herriman Cemetery: 12465 S Pioneer St., Herriman, Utah
Tributes
Rich and Family,
I was heartbroken to hear of Debbie’s passing. I remember when Rich brought her home to our neighborhood as his new bride. We were all ecstatic. She was genuinely sweet and kind in her words, thoughts, and deeds. She raised such a beautiful family.
Please know of my deepest sympathy. I have experienced what you are going through with the passing of my husband, Jim. I testify of the Lord’s plan of salvation and happiness. Debbie is in a beautiful place of rest and very mindful of her family here on earth. She will be near.
I enjoyed talking on occasion to your dear mother at the Kearns pool. Her children are so very wonderful and were a great joy to her.
So sorry, she became so ill. She is on to bigger and better callings now. I will try to watch the funeral on zoom. God bless your dear family!
Mrs. Butterfield was the sweetest person you could ever meet. Her home was filled with so much warmth and peace.
I’ll never forget her kindness and the love that shined through her eyes.
Although our paths crossed for only a short while, I’ll always cherish the moments we were able to spend together. One day, I know we’ll meet again. 🕊️
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 (KJV)
Grateful for her and her family. Sending you all my prayers and my deepest condolences. 💛
I loved serving with Debbie in Cub Scouts. I loved our time together and her friendship. She was always teaching and I was honored and grateful for her lessons to me and my family. Sending prayers of comfort to her sweet family.
I met Debra when she was a missionary in France and I had been recently baptized. All my life, I saw her as an angel who was much too pure and perfect for this earth. I thank the Lord for gracing my life with knowing this angel.
Debbie was a sweet friend to me and my wife. She will be missed dearly by us. Keeping Richard and family in our prayers.
Debra is just a sweetheart to everyone. Her infectious smile will sorely be missed in our ward and she as well as her husband Rich have been very wonderful and compassionate neighbors.
Dear Butterfield Family
Our thoughts are with your family. Debbie is one of the kindest ladies that we have ever met. She always had a positive attitude and was willing to do anything for anyone. I remember the day that Benjamin passed away. Rich was standing at the stop of the stairs holding Benjamin as Debbie just hugged me and sobbed. It was a very tender moment. Debbie had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In her last text to me, she said that she was counting her many blessings. Debbie is truly an amazing daughter of our Heavenly Father. She will truly be missed.
My mother and I were asked to be Debbie's visiting teachers. She was always very welcoming, and we had many intimate conversations. I believe my mother was her oldest piano student. I admire Debbie's unwavering faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm sure my mother was waiting to embrace Debbie when she passed to the other side of the vail.
Debbie was the kindest loving neighbor. She always looked for ways to check on you without appearing to do so. She taught me the true meeting of love as I watched her take care of her special son Benjamin before the Savior took him home. I am sure mother and son are rejoicing together and looking for ways to continue blessing her family here on earth. I was blessed to know her.
We will always remember Debbie's loving smiles, bright outlook and caring personality. She left us too soon.
She loved me just the way I was, and always helped me feel special and welcomed. She always served us with love. Grateful that she expanded my understanding in playing the piano.
She will be missed. Our condolences to the family.
I was so sorry to have missed Debbie's funeral services. I was able to zoom in, though, and it was a lovely service for a very beautiful friend. Some of my very best memories are of her wonderful example as a mother and friend. We raised our children together, and I enjoyed being her visiting teacher and the wonderful chats we would have.
Thank you, Debbie for being an example and friend to me.
