  • Our sweet mother and grandmother, Devean Ross Gardner Smart, passed away on December 13, 2020, from cancer and age-related causes. She was the first child born to Devear Carl Ross and Martha Louisa Jackson in Tridell, Utah on November, 13, 1929. Growing up in a rural, farming community, she had many chores which taught her how to work hard. She also took care of her two younger sisters. She married Edward Jack Gardner February 11, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple and then settled in Cedar Fort, Utah. Together they had three sons Nyal, Ross, and Glade. Most of her life was spent in Sandy. She began working in 1961 for Utah Telephone Employees Credit Union, retiring as Supervisor in 1985. Jack passed away December 14, 1980. She was married again in May of 1983, to a longtime friend, Wayne Staten Smart, who had lost his wife the year before. Devean loved to travel, going across the country, into Canada and Alaska in motorhomes with friends. Often her winters were spent in Quartzite, AZ., with relatives and friends, where she made beautiful quilts. Fun Christmas parties, collecting porcelain dolls and birds to fill her curio cabinets were some of her favorite pastimes. She loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them. She loved, accepted, and freely forgave all, including children, spouses, step-children and grandchildren. She and Wayne served faithfully in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doing indexing and temple work. Wayne passed away January 30, 2006. She had a testimony of her Savior and was a long-time member of the Mountain Oaks ward. Sadly, the last months of her life with the COVID pandemic, she was unable to see her family and was very lonely, however, thankfully, she was surrounded by family at her passing. She leaves behind her sons, Nyal Dee Gardner (Terri), Ross Jack Gardner (Nan), Glade Rafe Gardner (Eugenia), and Wayne’s children, Brent Wayne Smart (Denise), Kalyn Smart (Tom), and Annette Oliphant, 39 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, sisters Mern Cook and husband, Marvin Cook, and Elaine Harman and husband, Dave Harman, Lois Jacob Gardner (daughter-in-law), Kathrine Leavitt Gardner, (daughter-in-law), and grandson, Jared Ross Gardner. The family would like to express their profound gratitude to the Smart family for their love and kindness to our mom through the years, and a special thanks to her granddaughters Lisa Gardner Larsen and Kadee Smart Frisbey, step-daughter-in-law, Denise Smart, the staff at Cedarwood Retirement and Hospice for their care in her final days. A viewing will be held Saturday, December 19, at 10:00 a.m. with a graveside service immediately following at 11:30 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S), Sandy. Current Covid guidelines will be followed with masks and social distancing.

    Guestbook/Condolences

Devean was a friend and my boss for many years at UTELCU. I haven't seen her for awhile but am sorry to see she has passed on.
Nyal, Ross and Glade, I hope you are all doing well and that you will be comforted with the loss of your mom.
