Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Donn Raymond Chytraus, passed away at his home on September 22nd, 2026. He was a gentle giant with a loving heart who was best known for his dry humor and for enjoying a joke with others.
He was born to Raymond and Ruth Chytraus on December 7th, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended Uintah Elementary School, where he met his lifetime best friend Tom in 2nd grade. Then he attended Roosevelt Junior High and East High School, where he played soccer for the high school team.
He spent most of his life being an HVAC serviceman. He learned the trade from his father and then taught his own sons that hard work and honesty are attributes to live by. He also believed in playing hard as a family after working hard because family was most important to him.
He was a lifetime active member of the Church of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a mission in New Zealand. After returning home from his mission, he shared the joy of the gospel by baptizing his father, Raymond, into the church. He continued serving as a Sunday school teacher, primary teacher, and by helping his wife Joy with all of her church service as well. He and Joy were married in 1975 and were sealed for all time and eternity 10 years later. They were blessed to spend 51 beautiful years together.
He has reunited in Heaven with his mother Ruth, his father Raymond, his brother Clark, and his special daughter Chrissy.
He is survived by his eternal love, Joy; his children: John, Neil (Alisa), Danielle, and Dean (Ashley); and his 12 grandchildren, with 3 grandchildren added to the family. He often said that he “only had kids to get the grandkids.”
The funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 1st, 2026, at the Crescent 10th Ward building at 10945 S. 1700 E. Sandy, UT. Viewing from 10:00-11:45 am and funeral service at 12:00 pm.

Donn was our backyard neighbor in Sandy. I think the Closterman kids spent more than half their time with the Chytraus family in their home. We were blessed to have a great neighbor like Donn. He was always there to help us with HVAC issues and just to talk.

Donn, I feel fortunate to have known you through Dean and your family over the years. Reading your obituary, one thing especially touched me—you met your lifelong best friend in 2nd grade. I couldn’t help but smile because that’s when I met Dean, too. It feels like a special connection we’ll always share.
Your love for Joy, your children, and your grandchildren was so evident, and it’s clear how much love you gave to your family throughout your life.
I’m grateful I had the opportunity to know you, and I’ll always be here for Dean and your family. Rest peacefully, Donn. You will be deeply missed.
I knew Donn at East High and became friends. We would often talk about sports especially basketball. We were both cut from the basketball team and met with coach Milne about his decision and not pleased at the way he treated us in fact he was quite arrogant. We both strongly disagreed with him. Donn was a great guy and glad to have called him a friend some 60 plus years ago.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss of Don. He was a wonderful man. A gentle giant so kind and caring. He was so proud of his family and I’m sure he will be missed by all. Be at peace in knowing that many were blessed to have been touched by having him in their life.
Dear Joy and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Donn’s death. We didn’t know him very well but we know and have known Dean for many years. John and he have been friends for almost 40 years and he would mention from time to time that he felt you and Donn were such nice people. We knew you had to be because of Dean.
Please know that you and your family are in our hearts and prayers. I know that Donn will be greatly missed but he will always be in your heart.
