Dorothy Gladys Culverhouse Fussek passed away peacefully in the presence of close friends on February 26, 2021, just six weeks after her one hundredth birthday. Dorothy was born on January 14, 1921 in London, England, the daughter of Leonard John and Florence Emily Holmes Culverhouse. She spoke lovingly of her family having been raised with five sisters and two brothers; Irene (Andrew) Garden, Jean (Roland) Cove, Kenneth Culverhouse, Sheila (Russell) Latimer, Alan (Sylvia) Culverhouse, Gwen (Cyril) Beck, Pamela (Richard) Poynter. She was especially close to her younger sister Gwen who died just last year of a lingering illness.

Dorothy served her beloved England in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II. Following the war, she was employed as a bookkeeper at an excellent hotel that featured a fine restaurant where she met a former Polish soldier, Juliusz Fussek, the restaurant maître d’. That meeting was the beginning of their eternal relationship. They were married on September 22, 1956. They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1960. They felt the need to be part of the gathering and emigrated to Utah in 1965. In 1985, Dorothy and Juliusz were called to serve a mission for the Church in Communist-controlled Poland. Due to incredible success, their 18-month mission was extended to five years. Upon their return to Salt Lake City in 1990, they continued to serve for decades in the Capitol Hill Ward. Juliusz passed away last year on June 29, 2020.

Dorothy was always kind and generous to others. The loves of her life were Juliusz, the gospel, her family, visits, conversation, singing, and her home. She often said, “I am a homebody. I just love my beautiful home with its wonderful view.” Dorothy is now truly home reunited with her beloved Juliusz.

A graveside service will be held Friday, March 5 at 12:00 at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
