In the words of Janice Rae Malmquist:
My life began in Des Moines, Iowa, and I remained there through High School. In 1952, I moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. I married Richard Martin and remained in Texas while he finished his combat tour of duty in Korea. We later moved back to Des Moines to allow him to finish his finance degree at Drake University. I worked and attended some classes there. We later lived in Corpus Christi again; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Omaha, Nebraska and then transferred to Salt Lake City with Nationwide Paper Company. Three beautiful daughters blessed our home -- Stephanie Jan, Sue Anne, and Lisa Louise. Each has completed degrees from the University of Utah and Westminster College, including three masters degrees and one Administrative Education degree. All three are in education and administration.
A divorce occurred for us after nearly 18 years. Five years later I met and married Newland Malmquist, who has been a true love and guide for my life. We have seven children together. He has one daughter and three boys and I have three girls. Oh, by the way, when we married, six of the seven were teenagers!! A stimulating challenge!! Newland's career was as a prominent Structural and Civil Engineer and we had a company called Larsen and Malmquist, Inc., Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors. He was also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Utah. Newland has served as the President for Structural Engineers of Utah and member and Chair of the Engineers and Land Surveyors Examining Board for the State of Utah. He has also been appointed as a Board member of the prestigious national Applied Technology Council. He has won four national Lincoln Arc Welding Awards.
As for the education in my life, I took courses at Drake University and the University of Utah. I passed the following exams: Professional Management Training Program Certificate, Legal Secretary Certification per the National Association of Legal Secretaries, 15-20 computer classes, and an Administrative Assistant Certification. While at the University of Utah, I passed six CPS Exams (Certified Professional Secretary). The CPS exams were difficult national exams.
The professional work I enjoyed the most was my last 23 years at the University of Utah. I was Assistant to the Director of Development (a Vice Presidential position). While working just two offices from President Fletcher, there were many memorable moments, especially when he personally carried a vacuum down the hall for me to my office. President Fletcher was later appointed the Director of NASA. I also met so many wonderful, interesting people such as presidents of major universities, senators, and major University donors. The funds for the first project for artificial organs, created by Dr. Kolf, were solicited through my office. He is the inventor of the kidney dialysis machine and the first artificial heart. The Repertory Dance program was also developed through this office during this time.
The other position I held at the University of Utah was as Administrative Assistant to the Chair of Sociology. I served six Chairs of the department; many times running the department while chairs were out of country or during extended periods when the department was pending a new chair. I also worked with Mr. Wally Wright on the planning and purchase of Trolley Square, and with Clark, Condie and Wright on the building of the Rodeway of Boise Hotel and planning and building of the Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake City. These positions, among many other interesting positions were highlights of my professional career, while an interest in fashion and talent in synchronized swimming lead me to also model and perform in water shows at country clubs throughout Salt Lake.
Professional organizations I've enjoyed are the American Business Women's Association and Professional Secretaries International.
Other organizations I'm a part of are University of Utah Career Development for University Secretaries, Charter member and Board member for the Salt Lake Chapter of the National Charity League, PEO, CPS West, and St. Joseph Villa Special Committee.
Our ambitions upon my husband's retirement were to spend some time together and also to explore some new experiences.
